Can you elaborate ... what exactly are you trying to do?
There are native triggers for "start of timeline" and "end of timeline", but you can also 'cheat' by adding other objects (off screen if you need them hidden) and using their timelines for timing.
I had a slide that had multiple animations on. I wanted to introduce these animations using slide layers instead of working an over stuffed cluttered slide. It was only when i built the extra layers that I realised there was no trigger to get things going. The animations were to run automatically. Hope this makes sense.
Yes you can. You can use the "Timeline" ends for the base slide and layer to trigger to move show the succeeding layers. I realize this is not an actual animation but check the file.

Hi Donna
Many thanks, that's really helpful. I knew to Storyline, it's a pretty cool bit of software.

Thank you! I've spent quite a bit of time this morning trying to work out why my layer would not appear using the timeline trigger - within minutes of viewing the timeline.story example it was all fixed!!
