A trick- I have seen this issue before - It bit me on the bum again today...
If you want to change states of an object using a trigger, make a new custom state - don't just use hidden, Hover etc. On a project today, a slide didn't work until I created a state 'off' with an empty space - Trying to change the objects to 'hidden' wouldn't work, however I tried it.
