Using user ID variable to funnel study participants into a scene

Jan 15, 2014

HI There

I am trying to use the text entry field to capture study participants' ID numbers e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. ,..200, and in turn use these numbers so that every participant will be assigned randomly to a different scene (one of three experimental conditions).

i.e.  There are three different scenes.  I want to allocate each participant to a different scene based on their IDs. e.g. Participant 1 completes scene 1, Participant 2 - scene 2, Participant 3 - scene 3, Participant 4, Scene 1, Participant 5 - Scene 2, Participant 6 - Scene 3....etc until all 200 participants have been allocated to one of the three scenes.

Can I use the entered IDs as a variable to be able to do this? It doesn't appear possible but I hope it can be done - as it will mean I dont have to allocate participants to my study manually.

Thanks

Sha

Hi Shalini and welcome to Heroes!

If the user's are entering the ID as a part of the Storyline course into a data entry field, you could set up the triggers on your "jump to scene" button/object with some additional conditions. So say, you have:

1. Button to go to the next scene.

2. Add a trigger to jump to scene one if the variable UserID is equal to 1 or 4 or 7, and so on.

You'd need to continue to set this up for each scene indicating all the possible variable numbers. It may be easier if you're able to group them into chunks, so say if the UserID is greater than 50 but less than 100, all those users go to Scene 2.
