Utilizing a Quiz to determine module completion and learning path

Apr 29, 2016

To all the heros,

I'm working with a client that has (in my opinion) a unique ask and I'm trying to guage whether the ask can be handled in Storyline in some manner. I'll summerize the scenario as follows:

  1. There are 16 independent modules that the learning audience must complete or at least prove knowledge profficiency.
  2. The client wishes to have all non-new hires to be assessed prior to taking any training for knowledge proficiency. I.e., there will be a super quiz that has scenarios specific to each module.
  3. Based on the results of the quiz, scenarios that were completed correctly will indicate to the LMS that the learner does not need to complete the affiliated modules and marks them as complete. Incorrect questions will require the learner to complete the affiliated module.

I know that an element of this may require some LMS customization. However, I'm curious if anyone has built such an assessment or something similar and could share any thoughts on the outcome - positive and negative?  As well, if anyone has an idea regarding the project or can lead me to any related resources, I'd surely appreciate it. Ultimately, we'll be meeting with the client next week and want to share realistically what can or cannot be done.

Thanks in advance............Paul

Hi, Paul -- Thanks for reaching out and my apologies if I am not clear on what you are asking, but perhaps some of the following discussions related to testing out may be of interest:

Hopefully that will help or others will have some ideas to share! :)

Thanks for the reply Christie,

What sets this ask apart is that the assessment is a standalone module that will be taken first. There will be 16 questions and each question is written on content from a specific training module. Once the learner completes the assessment, he/she will be credited for module completion for the correct answers and will have to complete the full modules for those answered incorrectly.

In essence, is there a way for SL to send a specific report by question or is there a way of creating 16 mini assessments within one SCO that can provide customized reporting?

Hi Paul,

When you say modules - do they need to be all separate courses? You could look at having all 16 questions in one Storyline course, tracked by one results slide. Depending on your LMS you should be able to pull reports that detail how they answered each question (incorrect or correct) and as you mentioned the LMS customization will then determine where they advance to in the next course.

Thanks Ashley,

Yes, there will be one assessment that will drive the registration process based on learner response. Based on your knowledge, is there anything specific that needs to happen on the SL end (when publishing) to allow the LMS to capture this info? For example, a results slide for each question. Or, is the responsibility on the LMS side of the equation? Thanks for your help.

Hi Paul!

You would not be able to track individual result slides in the LMS and I'm not sure I could speak to how you could get the LMS to track what you are asking here. It may be best to work with the LMS team/company to understand your options for what you need to build.

Articulate Storyline lets you track a course either by the number of slides viewed or by a single quiz (result slide). Tracking both measurements for the same course isn't supported. Similarly, tracking multiple quiz scores in the same course isn't supported. However, you may be able to track more than one SCO (shareable content object) in a single course using one of the unsupported methods in this article.

Of course, there is a wealth of knowledge in the community as well, so hopefully someone may be able to chime in and assist.
