Validate text entry box

Feb 18, 2013

Hi

First of all, let me admit that I am completely new to Articulate Storyline and I am trying out some basic stuff for the last 3-4 days.

Now, here are couple of questions. On the first page of my course, I want the student to enter his/ her username (text entry) and employee ID (alpha-numeric) and click Submit.

1.  Is there a way I can make the Data Entry field alpha-numeric?

2.  Is there a way I can limit the number of characters in these fields?

3.  Is there a way I can check whether the student entered any data in these fields before or on clicking the Submit button? Basically, I don't want the student to proceed without entering some text in these fields.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes, Sreekanth!

In a text entry field, learners can enter any alphanumeric characters.  A numeric entry field accepts only numbers, decimals, and hyphens preceding negative numbers (take a look at this tutorial for more information). So, you should be able to accomplish this by using a simple text entry field.

For your second question, I do not believe it's currently possible to limit the amount of characters entered into a text field.

For your third question, you should be able to do this. Using a variable and some conditions, you could allow the "Next" button to advance to the next slide when the condition is met. If the conditions are not met, the learner wouldn't be able to advance to the next section of the course. I found a suggestion over in this thread that may work for you.

Let us know how it goes!
