variable change on import

Jun 16, 2015

Hello,

I have an urgent problem....

I have made a new project with a lot of variables. When I copy this project and change the names of the variables and I want to merge this project with the original project, than Storyline changes the names of the copied variables. The triggers apply to the wrong project.

One project contains around 40 variables, and we have 10 projects, so it would be a lot of work to make a workaround.

I hope you have a solution so we can fix this problem in a more easy (fast) way.

Thanks in advance,

Is there any update to this issue? We are dead in the water with the project because of this bug in the system.
Thank you

Hi Cameron,

Thanks for checking in. The original issue was specific to changing the variable name and that has been fixed. Our team is still investigating an issue specific to the variables associated with dials, and how those misbehave if you've changed the variable name. We'll let you know here and in your case as soon as we have an update! In the meantime, it looks like rebuilding the dial interaction without renaming the variables would be the best route forward.

Also, I noticed that your email signature came through when you replied via email. You can remove that if you would like by clicking Edit beneath your response. Here’s a quick Peek video if you need help.

We are aware that we can recreate the dial to work around this. As you can see from the Storyline files we have tons of triggers some with multiple conditions regarding the two dials. This process would take days to complete for the roughly 10 to 12 Storyline files we have. Is this something that one of you representatives can do for us since this is ultimately the result of software bugs that have previously been identified and fixed numerous times? It is rather difficult for my manager to have us invest days' worth of time into this to work around a software bug after we have already invested so much money into this software that is supposed to help us prevent better eLearning content in less time than alternative software.
Thank you

Hi Cameron,

Our team can often help identify and share quick strategies to help with quickly updating all the triggers, so I'll ask Anna to take another look. Updating all the triggers in a file we're unfamiliar with may mean we'd change things that you didn't want and ultimately cause more work for you, so that wouldn't be something our team would take on.

We'll keep you posted on the issue with renaming the dial variables here and in your Support case!

I'm getting the same problem. I have multiple templates using the same slide master. The slide master has triggers and variables. When I import scenes from different templates into the same story I get asked if I want to 'Merge' or 'Copy and Rename' the identical variable, but both buttons do the same thing. My variable gets renamed. My slide master gets duplicated, and my triggers break. How can I get Merge to work?

Hi Peter,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm hopeful we can help!

If you're comfortable with sharing the file with us, we can go through the import process and see first-hand how the variables are handled. Simply use this upload link to share it privately.

In the meantime, I found this related discussion that may provide more context:
