Variable Stored and Returned With LMS

I'm having an issue with how a variable is stored with a LMS in a AICC course with resume turned on.

I have a true-false variable that is initially false.  During the course it gets set to true.  Before course exit (via a custom button) the variable value is set back to false and then the course exits.

However, at course re-launch the variable is coming back as true.  I need it to be false, which was its last value.

Any ideas what might be going on?
