I have my variables set up and the appropriate triggers set in place so that my course will change the color of a button to show a lesson has been completed. I have conditions on these triggers so that the buttons don't change colors until the timeline has started for a specific slide. However, I noticed that when I revisit the screen with these buttons before I finish a lesson, the color of the button for that lesson has already changed. How do I fix this?

I would recommend you move the trigger from "timeline starts" to "Timeline ends", or "Timeline reaches cue point #??" .
This way they have to reach that point on the slide to get the button color change.
