Variables in Storyline
Apr 19, 2019
Hello Everyone,
I have been facing a minor problem in Storyline. We are trying to create a psychometric assessment for our learners, and they have to input a number in the numeric entry field between one and five. However, we are unable to perfect it.
When we previewed the build, the total of all the numbers is calculating properly. But that means people can enter any number (e.g. 8888888), and it would be included in the total.
What can I do to limit the entry in the numeric entry field to between 1-5?
I have attached the assessment slides for reference.

HI Revati,
Have you considered using sliders in place of the numeric entries? That way you can ensure that all responses are within the appropriate range.
Hi David,
Thanks for the reply!
The problem with sliders is that we can't tabulate the total and give them a result.
Using sliders would give you exactly the same result as the slider is just a variable.
You could use up/down arrows to increase/decrease the variable instead along with conditions to ensure that it cannot go below zero and just show a reference instead of a data entry field
And to tag onto Phil's point, you could even just use up/down arrow buttons, with no slider. to allow the user to increase or decrease a numeric variable, with conditions (e.g., can't add if variable already = 5), and report the value of the variable in a text box (%score1%),
Revati,
Attached is a 2-slide .story file that I think demonstrates the ideas Phil and David proposed.
That's really nice work, Steve! And to Phil, re-reading your post, I see I missed the "instead," and essentially just repeated what you had already said.
Hi David, Steve, and Phil,
Thank you guys! You really helped me out.
Really appreciate the support.
