Variables Triggered by Button

I'm currently building a prototype for a course and I want some variables to change when the user clicks the next button. I've set up the variables so that they are triggered before the user advances to the next slide, but the variables are not changing. Instead the course just advances to the next slide. The buttons with triggers are on slides 2.2, 3.2, 4.2, and 5.2. I've included a text box with the variable references on those slides as well as the title slide.
I've used a similar approach in other projects and have not had this issue. Any ideas on why it is not working?

Thanks Seth but I really want the variables to change only after they have completed the content for that particular checkpoint. If the variables change when they make a selection on the Title slide then they haven't completed the content yet.
Think of the title slide as the gatekeeper. You can (try to) make sure they view the content in respective checkpoint sections.
