Variables - what are they for?

I came across the tutorials about using variables in Storyline, but I fall at the first hurdle, because I don't get what they're used for. I feel as if there is a 'basic grounding in the use of variables' tutorial missing.
Could someone give some examples of the circumstances under which variables might be used in the first place? Once I've got that, I reckon I'd be able to follow the tutorial with a little more 'oh, okay' and a little less 'huh?'

Hi Karyn and welcome to Heroes!
You could use variables for a number of different reasons - for example:
And the list goes on...
Thanks, Ashley. That helps a lot.
Hi Karyn, my simple explanation are that they are a way of passing information between slides and of storing information to use at a later date.
This is simplistic and the more you use variables the more uses you will find for them.
Spend the time learning variables Karyn, the knowledge is invaluable in creating more advanced content.
Here is an annotated file using variables and some javascript
