Versions of SCORM and Supported Articulate Programs

Oct 23, 2017

Hello everyone,

I am looking for information regarding the different versions of SCORM and the versions of Articulate Storyline that support SCORM 2.0.

I was asked by my IT department handling my LMS that they wanted to check if our Articulate Storyline 2 was able to output as SCORM 2.0. I can only find that Articulate Storyline 2 can output SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 (1st - 4th Editions), AICC, and Tin Can API.

What is SCORM 2.0 and how is it different from SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004's?

What versions of Articulate can output my e-learning story files as SCORM 2.0 if it is in fact different from SCORM 2004? If we require upgrading to Articulate 360 or Articulate Storyline 3, I need some information to present to my project leader to justify the upgrade. With upgrading, would 360 or Storyline 3 be the better upgrade?

If anyone has any information to help me understand the different versions and if I require upgrade to 360 or Storyline 3, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dustin,

I believe SCORM 2.0 was on of the initial names for xAPI (or Tin Can API) and we support that in Storyline 3 and Articulate 360. You may want to review our white paper here on implementing Tin Can API content. Storyline 3 and Storyline 360 publishes content to Tin Can API version 1.0.

As for choosing between Storyline 3 and Storyline 360 - it's entirely personal choice based on what will fit your needs! Storyline 360 is part of Articulate 360, which has everything you need for the entire course authoring process. An annual subscription service, it’ll provide you with continuous feature updates to Storyline (unlike Storyline 3). Articulate 360 includes the latest version of Storyline, our new web-based responsive authoring tool called Rise, plus all of our other authoring tools. It also includes 2+ million course assets, such as templates and stock photos, an easy-to-use project review app, and live online training with industry experts.

You may want to look at this table to see how Storyline 3 compares to  Storyline 360

You can try Storyline 360 by signing up for a free trial of Articulate 360 here.

Or try Storyline 3 here

So Tin Can API is the other name for SCORM 2.0?  if that is correct, then we wouldn't need to upgrade as we have Articulate Storyline 2 which can also output Tin Can API.

Please correct me if im wrong, Just want to confirm the information before i present it to my project leader.

And if we dont need to upgrade, the only main differences between Articulate Storyline 2 and Storyline 3 (or 360) is maybe some added features and maybe some better export scripting?

Hi Dustin,

I checked with a few members of my team, and we all agreed that we hadn't heard of SCORM 2.0 - except prior to Tin Can API (xAPI) and that it's believe to have been the name before release.

Storyline 2 also outputs to Tin Can API, version 1.0.

A lot of added features, especially HTML5 only output (and the new responsive player) which has been huge for users who are looking to abandon Flash. The table I shared earlier also compares Storyline 3 to earlier versions such as Storyline 2.
