Video and Audio problems with published content

Apr 09, 2013

I have created a couple different modules with Storyline for my company, and right now we are hosting them with a company called Safety Skills. I have created other modules with Adobe Captivate which contained video and audio files in the published content, and they played without too many problems on the Safety Skills server. I made the recommendation to switch to Storyline because of the ease of use, the great support from the online community, and overall it just seemed like a better product.

I have created a couple modules with Storyline now, and have some issues with audio and video components. I am fairly new to using Articulate Storyline and understand functionality and how to create, import, and edit objects on the slide, but I think the problems I'm running in to are more along the line of server settings. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for who to contact to figure this out?

Audio problems:

-Importing MP3 files into Storyline

-Audio works inside the program when editing slides, and works during slide/module previews

-Audio works in published modules when I view it straight from my computer, but will NOT play when it's hosted on the Safety Skills server

Video problems:

-Importing a WMV file into Storyline

-Video plays in the program when in editing mode and works during slide/module previews

-Video does NOT work once I publish the module (it doesn't show anything at all - no buffer wheel, no black box where the video should be, no player controls, etc)

-I read somewhere that if the machine cannot play MP4s it might be the source of the problems, but I can go into the module's output folder and access the converted MP4 video and play it there without any problems

Welcome to the community, Bekah!

It does sound, initially, that the issue might be with your Safety Skills server. Would you mind testing your course in SCORM Cloud to help us determine if the issue is Articulate-related or if it's on your LMS's side? If it appears in SCORM Cloud as well, we'd be happy to take a closer look at what might be going on. If you can't replicate the issue in SCORM Cloud, it's probably an issue that you'd want to take to your LMS team. The articles here and here may also help clear up common LMS issues.

And as far as publishing and sharing content, this is an invaluable article to familiarize yourself with.

You also mentioned the MP4s not playing, which may simply be a case of your server not being configured to support the MP4 mime type

Let us know how things go after giving those articles a look, and we'd be happy to answer any other questions you might have.

Welcome again, Bekah

This is precisely the reason I suggested that we switch to Articulate. Your help and quick response time is greatly appreciated!

I tested the modules in the SCORM Cloud and they played properly, so I will get in touch with our contact at Safety Skills to see how we need to go about fixing the problems. I figured I'd have to do that initially, but wanted to do some research on my own rather than make them try to debug things that might be my fault.

I'll also forward this to our team that will be setting up our in-house LMS to make sure they understand the proper settings for viewing and reporting for these modules.

Thank you SO. MUCH. Peter.. I am so happy with the customer service of Articulate and the knowledge I've gleaned from the e-Learning community.. I wish all aspects of life were as easy as working with Articulate.

Same issue. I've created 6 videos (HD) in Captivate (my tool of choice for software training over Storyline) and then put those videos into Storyline. The Captivate videos play fine outside of Storyline but as soon as I publish the storyline file, the audio/video does not sync right. I've seen this before. Why can't Storyline play embedded HD video files right?

Hi, Tracey! Happy to point you in the right direction. Can I get a few details from you first?

  • What version of Storyline are you using? You can find out by going to the Help tab, then clicking About Storyline.
  • Did you insert the video into Storyline as a file, or did you embed a video hosted on the web?
  • How are you testing the published output? Are you hosting it on a web server or LMS before testing?
