Video file replacement in published package

I have a project with several videos (quite long ones) and to allow me to use compression settings that better suit the project, and to reduce the 'publish' and 'preview' time, I am using a set of placeholder videos which are 20 seconds long.
When the project is finally published, I swap out the placeholder videos with the real videos and rename them accordingly.
The problem is that the video control bar still shows the original running length of the placeholder video, rather than the time of the actual video.
Is there any way to overcome this?
Whilst I am on the subject - why can't the video assets continue to have the same filenames as the originals? External files added to a project retain their names - why not video?

Hi Martin,
The videos are encoded as a part of the publish process, and a portion of that includes renaming the file name. As for replacing them and still seeing the initial time - I'll defer to our community experts, as it's not something our team can offer support for in terms of the modified output.
Thanks Ashley.
