Video from a Website Accessibility issues
Oct 29, 2019
Hello,
I am building a course that includes videos. I want to keep them in Microsoft Stream and insert them as an embed into the course.
It is also important that this course is accessible and works with screen readers so I need to make sure that all content is accessible with the tab key.
If I embed the content I can tab through and play the video on the screen (it's a bit messy but I think that is all on Microsoft) I can also tab through to all navigation before the video is played. Unfortunately once I start accessing any of the controls inside stream, the course won't let me use the tab key to move around the screen.
What makes this strange is that it does work when Menus & Controls is 'on' in player properties. If I attempt to publish this course without the player navigation, the tab function gets caught in a loop. Unfortunately I don't want to have the player controls visible as I have created all navigation buttons inside the course.
Has anyone else seen this inconsistency with embedded video and accessibility? Does anyone know of a workaround?

Hi Emma,
Thank you for reaching out! I am sorry that you are encountering this issue. Our team is investigating this behavior, and I am adding this thread to our report. As our team continues to look into this, we will be sure to provide any information we can share to this thread!
In the meantime, as you mentioned in your post, a workflow that helps is to include one of the built-in player controls:
We have found that adding just one of the Player Controls (like the volume button, for example), you can tab through the course without getting stuck on the web object.
Just an update - I have upgraded Storyline in the last couple of days but the problem is still there. Fingers crossed we can find a better solution soon.
Hi I just want to follow up in regards to this thread. Is there a workaround so that Microsoft Steam can be embedded into a Storyline module? If not is there a way to upload Stream video the the LMS?
Hi Layla!
Storyline 360 is compliant with current accessibility standards, but I'm not confident if Microsoft Stream is. My recommendation is to import the video (as in the .mp4 file) onto a slide. This way, it's easy to navigate the video using keyboard navigation. For example, using the space bar to pause/play.
I encourage others who are using Microsoft Stream to share their tips and tricks too!
Hi all!
I am happy to report that we are not seeing this behavior in Storyline 360 (Build 3.49.24347.0):
If you're still running into this snag, make sure you're using the latest version of Storyline 360.
