Video playback controls issue

Mar 25, 2013

Hi there,
I need the ability to add video controls. Understanding that Storyline is incapable, I made the video into a flash SWF with video controls on it BUT then Storyline refuses to show them...  I then read that Storyline was only compatible up to version 10 of flash, so I made it into a flash 9 version and only an actionscript 2....  Still doesn't work.  Anyone know a way to fix this?

Hi J W,

Sorry for jumping in a little late with this thread. First, I just wanted to point out that Storyline requires at least version 10 of Flash to view the course, so working with an older version to create the SWF may not actually produce a desirable result.

Out of curiosity, how long are the videos or video you're wanting to use here? Would screen recordings be an option for you? I know it's stepping away from what you've tried so far, but it may end up being a better option in the end. If you record the video using Storyline's screen recorder, you can insert the video into your slide as a single video and enable the video playback controls.

Would that work for you?

Thankyou for your reply!  the video's range from 3 min to 20 min.  I've tried version 9 to the current version of flash to no avail :-( .  I will try the screen recordings but I really shouldn't have to go to such lengths just to add video controls for a product that cost over $1000.  But thank you very much for your reply it is much appreciated, do you know of any sort of patch that Articulate has brought out for studio that would allow me to add video controls to any video that I added?

Hi JW,

Have you tried adjusting the video quality settings? It sounds a bit strange that the quality is dropping to an unacceptable level if you're recording them in Storyline. If you haven't already, is the publish quality settings for videos:

Also, if you insert the SWF as a video, there will be an option to enable player controls through Storyline under the "Options" tab. If this is enabled in Storyline, not the SWF itself, the seekbar won't have control over the video. However, if you disable this, the seekbar should have more control over it.

If you'd like, we'd be happy to take a look at the project and see if we can find a way to improve the quality, or get the controls working for you. You'll be able to attach the .STORY file on the second page of the following form:
