Video Plays Too Soon Problem

Jul 25, 2018

Hey,

Currently I have a video on a slide layer, where if the user needs additional help they can click a shape and go to that layer that has the video for further instruction. Everything works great.

Here is the problem, most of my colleagues have taken my course and don't run in to any issues, but my boss takes it and as soon as he gets to the first slide of the scene the audio from the video plays in the background on top of the audio from that particular slide layer. This slide has about 8 layers and the video is on layer 7 with the trigger to that layer being on layer 6. So why is it playing when he gets to the layer 1? I asked what he was viewing it in and he said Chrome, but so is everyone else. They seem to view it just fine without any issues. I copied the link from a Vimeo video which is how the video is placed in the scene. Not sure if this is a browser, storyline, or designer error... Please Help!

Thank you,
Hannah

I have retaken it a few times and another co-worker took it. This issue never came up. We are all viewing it on desk tops while my boss is on a laptop. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. But he has taken it a few times on his lap top and every single time it plays the video's audio on the first slide. My video like I said is on layer 7, it's not even on the base layer. I think we have Articulate Storyline 2, if that helps.

Thanks for the extra detail, Hannah!

Can I also confirm if you published the course for Web, LMS, or something else? Additionally, mind sharing your .story file here? We're happy to test it on our end and let you know what we find. If you need to share the project privately, use this upload link. ☺️We'll help you get to the bottom of this puzzle!

There are technically two videos in the scene. The first video is on a slide all by itself. But the one I am referring to is on slide 1.10 when if the user doesn't know how to get to the Qwerty keypad we have a helpful tip box they can click that takes them to the layer with the video. However, when my boss took it and got to this slide and was on the first layer, the video audio was playing in the background on top of the audio for that particular layer.

Thanks, Hannah! I published the file to Web using Storyline 2 (2.13.1804.2716) and tested the HTML5 and Flash output in Chrome 68. I'm also having trouble recreating your boss' experience on the Zone 500 slide so I still need your help:

  • What version of Chrome is he using? Does the audio issue happen when he tries other browsers?
  • You mentioned your boss tested the content on a laptop while everyone else tried a desktop. I'm curious if the issue happens on his desktop, too?

I'll be standing by!

Hey Katie,

My boss was taking the course in Chrome Version 62.0.3202.94 (Official Build) (64-bit). It does keep happening, he also said he hasn't tried it in any other browser. Another co-worker is taking it right now in Safari and it happened to her. It happens on every slide where I have the hint button to go to that video. She suggested I use Lightbox trigger? What are your thoughts?

Thank you,
Hannah

Hey, Hannah. Ah, I'm so sorry to hear another person has come across this problem–and on a different browser.

While I'm unable to reproduce the issue on Safari (version 11.1.2) as well, I'm going to share my notes with our Support Engineers for a closer look. They'll reach out to you via email once they've tested your file to let you know their findings–I'll also follow along!

In the meantime, I think incorporating a lightbox is a brilliant idea! They’re the perfect tool to bring important content (particularly videos) to the forefront while fading out other elements. Check out this handy All About Lightboxes guide!
