Video with Slide Overlay

Sep 17, 2012

I have a 30 min video of a live training session that I would like to turn into a course using Storyline. I have broken the video into 4 smaller sections and have added interactive elements between. I would like to add "slides" over the video with text supporting what the speaker is talking about. These would look similar to PowerPoint slides.

My process so far:

I have inserted the 4 videos, one on a slide

Created interactive elements, one to a slide

On the video slides I have created the "slides" with supporting text directly in Storyline. I first used the shapes tool to create a rectangle the same size as the story size, then added text to the image. I then moved the images to the position on the timeline where I wanted them to show over the video.

My issue is that if the learner pauses the video using the video player the timeline does not pause, which means the "slides" that I created will continue to show and get out of sync with the video. I tried to solve the issue by creating custom play/pause buttons and using slide layers. I laid these buttons over the video player - so it looks like you are pressing play/pause on the video player but in reality pause shows a slide layer (with nothing on it - but that has "pause base layer selected" and triggers to close layer and play media) that pauses the video, and play hides the slide layer and resumes play on the video. This works great for desktop but since the video player on iPad doesn't appear in the same place on desktop the learner can still use the original or "real" video player buttons.

Has anyone worked with video and "slides" over video? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Toni
