Videos no playing when revisiting slide on iPad

Jan 27, 2017

Hello,

We have had several problems with the playing the exported course on an iPad. The most recent problem is that videos don't play when revisiting a slide. Not even when 'forced' to by triggers such as 'play media when timeline starts' or play media when timeline reaches X'. This problem occurred only when using an iPad.

Does anyone have any ideas how to make this work? Without using the mobile player?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hello Reeta!

Thank you so much for reaching out here. Are you using Storyline 360? If so, we are aware of an issue where videos do not play when a slide is revisited on an iOS or Andriod device. This is one we've had on our radar for a while now, and I'll add your experience to the report to our Quality Assurance team. Once I have an update on this issue, I'll be sure to share it in this thread, and you'll receive a notification because you're now subscribed.

As a workaround, you might want to try inserting the video from a website instead of from a file.

Hi Alyssa and Reeta,

I ma having the same problem, however this is also happening on Desktop on Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. This is truly a mission critical issue. I could understand if only our mobile users were affected, but every desktop user will not be able to revisit a slide, and watch the video. Our organization depends heavily on video within Storyline, and I am sure many other users do as well.

Can you provide an estimate as to when you can resolve this issue within Storyline 360? We really need this issue resolved.

Hi Lee,

Thanks so much for sharing your experience with us. The issue I mentioned about videos in not playing when a slide is revisited on an iOS or Andriod device is a priority fix for us, and you'll be notified as soon as more information is released since you're now subscribed to this thread.

You mentioned you're seeing this on desktop, as well. I haven't seen the issue reported for desktop, so I'd like to know a little more about your set-up.

  • Which version of Storyline are you using?
  • Are you testing the published file in a web server or LMS?
  • Are your videos on the base layer of a slide, or on slide layers?

And if you don't mind sharing it with me so I can take a closer look, that would be really helpful!

Hi Alyssa,

A few details:

  • I am using Storyline 360 v3.3.9986.0
  • Issue occurs on Articulate 360 Review, and on our LMS NetExam.
  • Issue does not occur in local Storyline preview window.
  • I tested on Chrome and Safari, and Safari on an iPad, issue persists.
  • My video mp4 H.264, is on a base layer.

Upon revisiting a slide the timelines continues to run, but the video does not play. User can press the refresh button to get the video to play, but this is obviously not the intended learner experience.

Hey Lee,

Thanks for letting me know those details about your file and how you tested it. I put together a really quick sample file of an MP4 video embedded on a slide, and published it to Articulate Review here. When I tested this link in Chrome and Safari on desktop (latest versions), the video replayed when I clicked the next button and then the previous button.

You mentioned also testing in Safari on iPad, and there is a video replay issue on iOS and Andriod devices which we are actively trying to fix.

Would you mind sharing your file with me so I can take a closer look? You can either share it here using the Add Attachment button, or you can send it to us privately here, if you prefer that.

Hi all,

Great news! Articulate 360 Update 4  was just released, and included a number of fixes which you can see in the release notes available here.  The item you all may be particularly interested in is how it fixed various issues when editing videos in Storyline 360 and viewing videos in published output.

Just launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button for Storyline 360. Details here.
