Videos not playing in IE on HTML5 output

Sep 21, 2017

Hi all,

I've been having problems with multiple videos and multiple courses playing in IE10 & 11 with content published from SL360. It seems that when the page loads, the first frame of the video shows, but then fails to actually play. I have found that by swapping the video out for another one, and then changing it back, actually resolves this issue. However it's quite and inconvenience, especially with courses that are quite media heavy.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Alex

Hi there,

I came across this thread when I ran into the same problem. My course has an MP4 video in it and it was playing fine in Chrome but when I went to test in IE, it just showed the first frame. I was troubleshooting it for a while when I realized that my IE browser was zoomed to 125%. As soon as I returned it to 100% and closed the course window and reopened it, it worked fine. Just something else to look at if you haven't already tried it.

Info about my course - Originally a Storyline 2 file, upgraded to Storyline 3. Published with HTML5 only (client requirement, no more flash allowed). Course was tested on Chrome in SCORM Cloud and ran fine. Uploaded to LMS (Moodle) and tested with IE which is where video wouldn't play. Fixed by returning my zoom to 100%.

Hope this helps someone!

Hi all,

It seems like I have the same problem as mentioned in this topic, but I did not yet found a good solution

- In part three of my e-learning use 15 video's.
- All video's play in Chrome and Firefox
- All video's play in IE in windows 10.
- only 7 video's play if I pusblish the e-learning with IE in Windows 7 with HTML and Flash fallback.
- All video's play if I publish the e-learning with FLash (and HTML fallback), but that is not what we want.

So, the problem has to do with the fact, that some video's are not playing in IE with windows 7 and HTML. Strange thing is that it does not apply on al videos.

- I already tried the zoom solution, but it did not make a difference.
- It is not an LMS-problem, because we also see it happen outside the lms.
- Videos which are not working: 3,5,7,8,12,13,14,15.

Any other suggestions to solve this?  Thanks!

Hi Jurrian,

Thanks for sharing your file. I tested publishing it as well and uploaded here to SCORM Cloud. Can you test that version for me and let me know how it behaves for you? It worked normally in IE11 on Windows 10.

If that one does not work, I'll want to get you started in a Support case so that you can share a copy of your .story file with our Support Engineers.

Hi Ashley, Beth,

After a vacation I must admit that I forgot that I posted this question in this topic. So excuse me for this late reaction.

It's correct that video's work in IE11 on Windows 10. The problem was that video's play  with IE in Windows 7 with HTML and Flash fallback. Because of a a deadline, we decided to publish it with Flash.

Unfortunately I did not found a way to publish the e-learning with HTML (and Flash Fall back) with all video's working in Windows 7.

Maybe some usefull information to detect a solution:
- All video's were screencasts recorded in Storyline.
- All vids had a voice-over and subtitles.
- Some vids did play, others not.
- The videos lasted  between 2 and 8 minutes.
- Publish with lower quality settings did not make a different.

Good luck with the solution! Let me know  if you any other questions.

Hi Jurrian,

Thanks for sharing that information! It sounds really similar to an issue our team is investigating where HD videos won't play when viewing content on Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7 PC given the following scenario:

  • You set your slide size to custom.
  • The video width is equal to your slide size width.
  • You're viewing HTML5 output.
  • This appears to affect videos that are more than 998 pixels width.

Do those additional pieces match your course setup?

Beth, let me know if that's what you're seeing too and I can add this discussion to the report with our team and we'll keep you updated here!

Hi Ashley,

The problem is specific to IE 11 on Windows 7 with HTML5 Output.  (Same course and videos  worked fine for two years, but videos stopped playing this Spring.)

Video is 640 x 360. Video does not equal slide size width and slide is not set to any custom size.

Attached is a sample.  Please let me know if there's anything that I can try on this end.

Hi there, Beth. Really appreciate you confirming the environment! I've attached your experience to this bug's report, and we’ll keep you posted on its progress!

..and thanks for sharing a sample with us! ☺️ I took a peek at the project where the slide size is set to 720 x 540 (4:3) and the width of both videos are less than the slide size width workarounds are in place–perfect!

Then, I published the project to Web–here's the HTML5 output! I tested it on IE11/Windows 7 where the videos on slide 3 and 6 played on my end. Let's see if we can nail down the culprit.

  • What version of IE11 are you using? To check, click the gear icon and then About Internet Explorer. Here's my detail:

IE11

I'll be standing by–we'll get to the bottom of this together!

Thanks for the extra detail, Beth!

Yikes, it looks like the IE11 attachment didn't come through here. Could you click here to open our discussion and then use the Add Attachment button.

In the meantime, I republished the file to Web in Storyline 3 (v.3.4.15731.0) and tested the new HTML5 output on a different version of IE11/Windows 7 where I'm able to play both videos. Here's a Peek of what I saw and here's the link to the output.

Could you give the new link a try and let me know what happens? I'll be here!

Good morning, Beth! I'm really happy to hear that the videos run in SCORM Cloud; let's see what we can find so the recordings can also load in your LMS.

In terms of next steps, you could enable LMS debug mode to capture the communication flowing back and forth between your test file and LMS. Then, share that data with your LMS administrator to see what the culprit is. I'm curious to hear their thoughts, and will be standing by!
