Videos not playing in IE on HTML5 output

Sep 21, 2017

Hi all,

I've been having problems with multiple videos and multiple courses playing in IE10 & 11 with content published from SL360. It seems that when the page loads, the first frame of the video shows, but then fails to actually play. I have found that by swapping the video out for another one, and then changing it back, actually resolves this issue. However it's quite and inconvenience, especially with courses that are quite media heavy.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Alex

Hi Leslie,

In my scenario, I face the issue of videos not loading only when I setup the videos to play in a new window. I have attached the error message screenshot.

The videos works perfectly when it is set to load within the course, in the slide stage itself.

As I said in my previous response, I am working with our LMS vendor and I hope to find some solution for this issue.

Hi Anitha,

Thank you for letting us know! Keep us updated on what your LMS vendor says, and please let us know if there is anything we can help with!

Hi Chiara,

Great question!

Here is how you can turn off compression altogether for MP4 videos created with baseline, main, or high profiles: (All other videos will be compressed automatically.)

  1. Select the video placeholder and go to the Options tab on the Storyline ribbon.
  2. Click the Compression drop-down list and choose None.

If you turn off video compression, be aware that published files will be larger, which could be problematic for learners with slow internet connections.

I'm exploring causes for non-playing videos in an SL360 package we released last week. Yes, part of the problem is the IE cache, and our LMS admins have faithfully communicated to our employees that virtually all LMS issues are probably related to that, so it's now standard practice to clear your cache and cookies before doing anything involving the LMS (which is ELM by Oracle).

My question is this: The compression option in SL360 that Vincent screenshot (above) is disabled - greyed out. See attached image.

1) How can I override this greyed-out control?

2) Why is it greyed out?

3) Why does another video NOT show the video options? Instead it's treated as a web object (which it is).

Both videos are refusing to play well with anything but Chrome, which (sadly) is not our default browser platform since our ELM license apparently was chiseled in stone tablets before Chrome was released....

Hi Joe,

Happy to help clarify a few items!

Why is my video compression grayed out, and can I override it?

If you edit your video in any way after importing, Storyline will re-encode the video, and the option to set compression will be grayed out.

Also, turning off video compression is only available for MP4 videos created with baseline, main, or high profiles. All other video files will be compressed when published.

If the "None" compression setting isn't working correctly on one of your video files, please send it to our Support team here! They can take a closer look and give you more insight into the encoding process.

Why doesn't my web object video have video controls?

A web object can be videos, games, web applications, reference materials, and more. If you wanted to include Storyline's video controls on a video, you'd have to download the source and import it into Storyline. Here's our user guide on how web objects work:

Storyline 360: Adding Web Objects

I hope this helps and let us know if you have further questions!

Ren, thank you for the options and the explanation! Since there are three videos in the package, it was unusual for me to see the non-playing behavior bounce randomly around the three videos. (One is embedded, one is a YT link, and one is a Vimeo link.)

All three were reported as non-playing at different times by different testers, and none were consistently failing. In fact, more testers reported no issues, which again points to a problem with the LMS and not SL.

But your explanations are helpful. Thank you!

Hi Ren, we have over 12,000 users, and a few are having issues (blank screen) with files that contain animated videos.  I've read the thread above, what should the browser settings ideally be? so we can ask our using to check.  Unfortunately I've been unable to replicate the problem and cant work out why this is happening and have put it down to poor internet connection or browser which isnt really helpful to the user!  Courses are published in Articulate 360 usind HTML flash backup - thanks
