Videos on Slides

hello. I’m fairly new to Storyline and need to create a simple elearning and hope I can get some advice here . I have 4 slides (Each a menu item) and each slide has a mp4 video uploaded. I set the seek bar so it can only be advance after completing the video, and that works fine. What doesn’t work is if someone wants to skip to another slide that they have already watched (they are set as menu items), it won't let them. for examp , I complete menu/slide 1 and then finish 2, but want to go back and view 1...it won’t let me go back to 1. Any thoughts? Thank you in advance.

Hi Ani! When setting your player options you should pay attention to two things:
1. Seekbar - in this case you already set it as "allow drag after completion"
2. Menu Restriction - which is in this case probably locked.
Go to your player options, and select the tab Menu (top left corner). Then, under the list, select the settings for the Menu - here you will find the restriction options for the menu items, as well as next/prev buttons. In this case, you should set the Menu to be restricted. This way, it will unlock once the slide is completed and you should be able to get back.
Screenshots attached for easier navigation.
Let me know if this worked, or if you have any other questions :)
Thank you for the reply. I actually tried those menu steps but didn’t know if I should uncheck the box under “restricted” .
I'm retesting the setup you suggested. Although the learner can't move the seek bar forward, i'm wondering why they cant pull the seekbar back. For example, if they missed what the trainer says, they can only go back to start and not back a few seconds.
I think my Storyline is glitching. I'm trying not to give up. :( Any help is tremendously appreciated.
I created 5 slides, each slide has a MP4 video imported.
What i'm trying to do:
Hi Ani,
Okay, I am trying to figure out the problem you are facing...
The "Allow drag after completion" option of the seekbar allows the user to move it once the slide is completed (only when it does not move to the next slide automatically). So when it stays on the end, you can drag it back as much as you want. In the meantime, you can only restart the slide. I know this is not what you expected, but for now, it is how it works. I need to take a look and see if I can find some more complex solutions that can fix it.
The Menu options should be set as restricted in order to allow the user to revisit completed slides. The same should be applied to the buttons (the checkbox). This will mean that all previous slides can be accessed, and you can skip between those.
Here is some first thought proposal that may not be that pretty:
When you import the video, in the options for it, you have the option to have the video player (video controls) visible. It doesn't look very pretty, and you will have two seekbars (or you can turn of the player seekbar if the video is the only content that you have on the slide), and keep the video seekbar only.
The trick is that the video controls are automatically free to drag, so what came to my mind at this moment is to create a block for each which will turn hidden once the slide is completed, so that once you revisit the slide, you can drag through the video. Again, even in this case, in the initial view, the user will not be able to drag the seekbar back while watching.
If you choose to do this, you will need to create a transparent rectangular over the video seekbar with the initial state Normal. Once the timeline ends, change its state to hidden. In the slide properties, set that the video will resume the saved state when revisited.
Again, I will try to find some more complex solutions for the actual player seekbar and the ability to go back, however, I am not sure that will be possible now. I haven't done anything similar recently, but maybe someone in the community has, I know there has been a mention on this topic.
thank you for the in dept reply. I didn't turn on the video seekbar but I do have the slide one set on the user being able to move after completing. The only piece that doesn't work is the reply button on the seekbar . Not sure when when on a new slide or one that has already been viewed, the use can't click to replay the video.
Hi Ani!
It looks like you're getting fantastic advice from Magdalena. Thank you, Magdalena!
Your latest description sounds like a match to an issue we're looking into in Storyline 360. We found that videos do not restart when learners click on Replay if there is a button with a 'Jump to next slide' trigger.
If you don't mind sharing your .story file with us, we're happy to verify whether that bug is affecting your file or if something else is going on!
Hello Katie!
It is good to know this, as I was trying to figure it out, and could not. Thanks for letting us know about the potential bug.
hope it gets resolved soon :)
sure, but is there a way to send outside this post? as in privately?
Absolutely, Ani.
Katie shared a link above, but I'll post it right here for you again :)
