WCAG 2.0 AA Compliance: Video in Storyline?

Oct 03, 2019

Hey everyone,

I'm working on a WCAG 2.0 AA compliant course and one object in the course is a video. It appears that starting/stopping a video via keyboard is possible (by simply tabbing to it and using the spacebar or Enter), but there doesn't appear to be a way to utilize the video controls (such as going back a few seconds or forward a few seconds) via keyboard. That type of control is necessary for compliance.

Is there a way around this I'm just not seeing? Or is there a different way video needs to be utilized in Storyline to maintain compliance?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Ashley!

I hear exactly what you're saying! There isn't a way for the user to rewind or fast-forward using the keyboard.

I'm going to pass your comments to our team. I can see where this would be needed in order to create an accessible course with media like videos.

In the meantime, we have a lot of brilliant Instructional Designers in this community who are also creating accessible courses. I hope they can help with creating a workaround for this specific design in Storyline!

Thanks Lauren! The only workaround I've come up with so far involves using the slide seekbar and tying the video to that (as opposed to using the built in video controls). It's a bit clunky as we don't use the seekbar anywhere else in our courses but it's the only thing I've been able to wrangle.

If anyone else has any ideas, I'd love to hear them!

Hi Lauren,

Apologies for the late notice, but I wanted to jump in here to let you know in Storyline 360 Update 47, in addition to keyboard shortcuts to mute/unmute audio, replay the slide, and turn closed captions on/off, learners can now fast forward and rewind a slide's timeline using the arrow keys on the seekbar.

In player properties, keep the default setting to Allow user to drag seekbar. To prevent fast forward and rewind, just change the seekbar to Seekbar is read-only.

If you haven't already updated to the latest version, launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button for Storyline 360. Details here.
