Web Objects Playing on Hidden Layers

Jul 25, 2017

Hi,

Hoping some experienced Storyliners can help with an issue. Been using Storyline 2 for several years now to publish a CPD elearning course. We are a disability organisation so accessibility is a big issue for us. For this reason we use youtube video in web objects rather than embedded video so that we can access the full closed captions functionality of youtube.

Our standard video slides involve a text intro to the video with a 'watch it now' button which launched a new layer with a web object. Once the layer launched the video would begin playing....until recently. Not sure if it's the byproduct of an update or something, but we ran some small text updates to the course and re-published and now the web objects start immediately in the background meaning you can hear the audio of the vids before you've clicked the 'watch it now' button on and the video layer is visible.

Anyone else experiencing this or have any potential solutions?

Any info appreciated! Thanks,

Dara

Hi Crystal,

Thanks for getting back to me! That's exactly right - issue occurs pre the layer being viewed.

I've 'saved as' a few slides to demo the problem. Also attached my publish settings - for LMS, html5 ticked etc. Our course is via moodle and i accessed it on Chrome.

Any pointers appreciated as if no solution is available i'm going to have to re-do the 50+ video slides on the course and separate them into individual slides rather than extra layers.

Thanks Dara - and as Crystal mentioned it seems to be the same issue we have reported for Storyline 2. I'll include this discussion as a part of that report with our team and we continue to keep an eye on it to evaluate how many customers are impacted and what impact it has on courses. The number of customers and depth of impact are two of the elements that help us prioritize bugs and fixes.

Here's some more detail about how we tackle bugs. I'm really sorry that I can't say if this issue will be fixed but you're in the right place to stay updated on this bug's progress.

If I come across other ideas for a workaround, I'll be sure to share them with you here too!

Noooooooooooo! Looks like a few days of unnecessary work ahead. Stuff like this that would make me consider the move to Captivate.

Thanks in any case for taking the time to get back to me.

May i ask if it's possible that this problem would be resolved by downloading an older version of Storyline 2 and re-publishing? If so can you point me toward where i might get the older version?

I'm sorry, Dara.  😞  Hate to create more work for you.

We're currently on update 12 in Storyline 2, and I'm not sure in what update this behavior presented.  I would hate to make your projects vulnerable to other issues that have been addressed in previous updates.

Is using only the Flash output an option for you?  Your web object media should play as expected on layers in Flash.  Also, the Flash output supports JAWS screen reader in Internet Explorer, improving your course's accessibility.
