What is this error message that erased my whole morning?

Sep 21, 2015

I was working away, and had just completed editing my most recent application simulation (step-by-step screen recording) when I no longer had access to the Story View.

Sometimes, I get the "Storyline has stopped working" message but a good amount of changes are recovered when that happens... NOTHING was recovered here, despite saving ritually.  (I know I've saved my project a few times this morning.)

I got the message below, and nothing I had done at all was saved or recovered. Anyone know why this happened?!  SO frustrated :(

Hi Erin!

There may still be a working version of your project in your temp files. Here's how to check:

1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer:

%appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.

3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

Also, be sure to always create, edit, and publish projects on your local hard drive. Working from a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, such as file corruption, an inability to save changes, and loss of resources. See this article for details.

If you are having multiple issues with your software, I would advise to be sure you are utilizing the latest update, which is now Update 7. If you are, then please conduct a repair.

Thank you for the steps, Leslie.  They worked very well to recover my project!

Only problem is that I had already started rebuilding by the time I saw this note, and I recovered what I was currently working on (the "most recent version" of the project.)

I will definitely follow these steps right away if this should ever happen again!

Thanks again :)

Hi again Leslie,

This happened again and I followed your steps.  Everything's great until I get to opening it from the desktop.  I'm now getting an error saying:

"This project is invalid or corrupt and cannot be opened.  It may have been created in an earlier version of Storyline"  (But I haven't done any updates!)

Ideas?

Thx again

Hi Erin!

Not something you want to experience multiple times for sure.

Is this the same file that you keep having difficulties with? I would advise to try to get back to a working version again and start a new file so that you can import these slides into your new file.

Did you update to the latest version or conduct a repair as I previously shared above?
