I stupidly opened an ongoing project in Storyline 2. It said it was creating a backup of my file, so I didn't panic. I thought better of it, and realized I should save it in Storyline 1 by a different name. I never saved the file in Storyline 2.
Now the file has been converted to Storyline 2 and I can't open it in Storyline 1. Please help.

Victoria,
The backup file should be created in it's original file location.

That is where I expected it to be, but it isn't there. Is there a convention for how this file should be named so that I can search for it?
If your file name was, say, "blue", then the backup would be named "blue - SL1 Backup". The extension will be the same (.story).
Yep, that is exactly what my test of the feature did.
It's very strange. I see the backup file now. And yet, I did not see it yesterday afternoon. Odd.
Thanks for the update Victoria and I'm glad the file's reappeared.
