Why does Storyline change some button names?
Mar 04, 2015
I have a storyline file with 5 scenes. At the moment, each scene has a single slide (I'm trying to set up a navigation scheme first). One slide can be regarded as the central point of navigation, and all of the other slides have a "Return" button that will take the user back to the central point. After building the Return button and setting it to return to the navigation slide, I copied it to the other slides, at which point it got renamed from "btnReturn" (the original) to "btnReturn 1" (each copy). This would make sense if there was a requirement for each button to have a unique name, but there obviously isn't, as each of the copied button is named "btnReturn 1". Also, I've noticed that if I build a button on a slide, and then copy the slide rather than the button, the button doesn't get renamed.
Does anyone have a clue what's going on here?
Thanks...

Hi Alex,
Were you copying it originally on the same slide? If so, then it'll be renamed so that when you're working with triggers and such you can refer to the buttons as different items.
That's the behavior I'm seeing on my Storyline 2 files.
No. I was copying buttons onto different slides.
Hi Alex,
Are you in Storyline 1 or Storyline 2? How are you copying them? When I copy a button and then paste it to a different slide it keeps the original button name (Button 1) unless I've manually changed the name, then it starts appending 1, 2, 3 and so on to the button name.
I always change my button names. But I was pasting into a different slide from the one where the button originated.
If I copy/paste only the button (pasting to a new slide), the name gets changed. If I copy/paste the whole slide, the button name doesn't get changed.
This isn't a problem. I'm just curious.
The "why" is not always something I can answer, as I'm not one of our developers - but I suspect, if duplicating a slide (copy paste the entire thing) it's still referring to the original button by name as I mentioned before in terms of triggers and other elements that are associated with it.
