Why does the Storyline application display so small?

Oct 01, 2014

Hi I just downloaded the trial version yesterday, When I open Storyline everything that displays in the window is so small - icons, fonts, menus etc. I've tried changing the resolution on my laptop and my second monitor but it doesn't change. Is there a way to make it larger.

thanks,

Jeanette

Hi Kelsey and welcome to Heroes!

The DPI setting I mentioned can cause it to display smaller based on your overall system and screen resolution, but you'll need to work at 96 DPI to have Storyline function as expected.

I know a few users have shared their thoughts on having the ability to work on different DPI settings here with our product development team.

Hi Timothy,

Just to confirm, this is in regards to the Storyline UI not the published output. The latter you would control overall sizing based on the story size, player/browser display settings you've used and elements you've added to the course.

As for the UI, we've shared with our team that high resolution monitors - typically those greater than 2,000 pixels in width - can cause the Storyline UI to appear very small and difficult to read. They're looking into fixes and changes for future versions of Storyline, but in the meantime you could look at adjusting the resolution of your monitor. If you're seeing this on a Mac in VM environment there are documented steps on how to disable the retina resolution such as detailed here.

You're also welcome and encouraged to share your thoughts on this set up in the form of a feature request, as those get tracked and reviewed by our product team.

Thank you Ashley, I greatly appreciate your input. It definitely would be a reward to be able to make the published output larger for the smaller details. Although I've noticed in the "Player" icon (under "Home" tab), when you click on "Other" under "Properties", you can adjust Browser Settings via Size and Player Size... Will this help to make the display larger?

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Timothy,

Yes, those settings will allow you to adjust how it displays with the published output. If you set it to full the browser and scale the player, it should set it to be as large as the users window/browser will allow - but it's worth noting that will scale your content as well, so you may want to do a test and see how images, text, etc. appear and if that causes any difficulties for you. You can read about the different player/browser settings here.

Similarly you could look at increasing the story size and then having larger overall items on your slide.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your patience and for continuing to share your experiences using Storyline on a high resolution display.

As a few of the staff here have mentioned previously, it’s something that we’ve continued to discuss with our Quality Assurance team. I wanted to offer a bit more insight into what’s happening and what our team is working on.

When Storyline was initially developed, we wanted to create a product powerful enough to enable rich new kinds of e-learning courses to be created. We realized early on that to create the user experience we wanted – from rendering the stage itself to our various panels and dialogs – much of the user interface code would have to be custom written to look and function in a specific way.

The landscape has changed considerably Since Storyline 2 was released in 2014. Microsoft started supporting scaling for high resolution displays in Windows 8.1, and increasing numbers of high definition laptops and external monitors are now available.

Our team is currently evaluating a number of different approaches that would allow Storyline 2 to scale gracefully on high resolution displays. Because of the amount of custom user interface and rendering code within Storyline, supporting these new devices is not as simple as flicking a switch. The changes required would be broad and impact all the elements of Storyline’s interface, so we feel it’s important to take a considered approach and make sure our proposed solution doesn’t introduce any unintended breakdowns. Although I don’t have a specific timeline today, I will share further information here once we’re further down the road.

In the meantime, please keep the feedback coming. You are the ones we’re working so hard for. The staff who monitor the forums are here to advocate for your needs, so rest assured that our product managers and quality assurance team are aware of this issue and are working to address the concerns you’ve raised.

Hi Ashley,

I just got a new laptop with a high resolution screen and I too am experiencing the same issue of trying to work with a very small version of Storyline. I was happy to see a new, recent response from you and I understand the complexities of trying to fix the issue. I'll keep watching here for news.

Oddly enough for me, plugging into a second monitor increases the size of Storyline on my laptop screen to a workable size. I think the two screens are splitting the size difference.

Thanks Jeff for popping in here, and now that you've responded you'll also be subscribed to the thread and receive any updates or notifications via email.

You should be able to see what the display settings are for when you're using two monitors - often the choices are to duplicate or extend into the other display. The latter is what I use so that I can drag items from one monitor to another.

Thanks for your support. This display issue actually seems fairly complex. I hope it will be fixed soon though as I cannot use Storyline 2 on my laptop.

In the meantime, I have plugged a second monitor on my laptop. That way, I manage to get Storyline 2 displayed in a "workable size" on that second screen (but it remains small anyway).

I'll keep watching for news.

Hi Clotilde,

It certainly does sound complicated as it's been explained to me by our team - but I know we've got some of the best on it and will look forward to sharing news with you here.

As for other ideas to take a look at to help it display properly you may also want to try looking at changing the overall width of your display to less than 2,000 pixels which some other users have shared helped. I'm not sure which type of computer you're using, but if you're using a Mac withParallels or VMware, you can disable the Retina settings as detailed here.

Hi guys, I am experiencing the same issue here. I have looked at the tips you have provided about the DPI settings but I haven't found any information for Widow 10 pro version.I don't think it is the issue though. Also I have recently changed laptop, I understand from the previous conversations that a high resolution screen might be responsible for the change in the display settings? just trying to figure it out here:) Let me know if you have anymore information:) thanks guys!!!

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Amandine,

Are you unable to change the DPI setting in Windows 10? The high resolution laptops are known to be a large portion of the issue here in that they're able to display a larger amount of picels and Storyline doesn't scale to match the larger screen size available but instead stays at the sizing we have set and then can display quite small. You could also look at changing your display to only allow for 2,000 pixels in width and that has also assisted other users with the same set up.

Thank you for this discussion.  I run Storyline on two external monitors, and even then I have a very hard time with the font size of the panel items, especially the Trigger and Slide layer panels.  For  an involved interaction with multiple triggers, I've actually had to take a screenshot of the panel, put it into snagit and increase the overall size in order to read the trigger statements.  I have tried all the above tricks with monitor settings and DPI, but nothing helps.  I'd appreciate it if you pass along this info.  Storyline is a terrific product, but I'm tempted to switch to other programs that have a better user experience.
