Why doesn't the align-middle text actually align to middle?

I have a text box set to align-middle. When copying and pasting text from PPT, the text seems aligned top. I thought perhaps some hidden formatting was transferring from PPT. I tried "clear formatting", I tried creating a fresh slide and typing all the content in Storyline. I still get the same result. Below are screen shots of what it looks like and the settings I'm using. (I do not have any empty line-breaks either)

Just tried setting it to "Do not Autofit" and it seems to be working. If I set the pt size manually it aligns to middle. It seems the "Shrink text on overflow" setting doesn't play well with "align to middle".
