Why is my course so slow?
Jul 21, 2015
Hi! Can anyone suggest how I can speed my course up? It is a Storyline 2 course, which runs fine from my computer but slows right down when it is played over our LMS.
It takes up to 10 seconds for each screen to load, which gives the impression that it has frozen. The audio sometimes misses the first second of sound which sounds bad.
I have tried compressing the images within the course, and reducing the audio/video/sound quality. It is now 18MB when published.
It is reporting completion status based on a single results slide being reached, which has no associated questions.
It is SCORM 2004, 4th edition, and does not have any HTML5 content included. It is being played through the Oracle Taleo LMS.
Please help, I don't know what else to try!! Will publishing in a different format make any difference?

I have changed the tracking to track by slides viewed rather than by the results slide, and it is much quicker...
But the sister course to this one has a pass/fail quiz included, with questions randomly drawn from a bank - how can I keep the assessment, so that users must pass the quiz to complete the course, but not have to rely on sending a result to the LMS, which seems to be what slows it down?
Hi Rebecca! Have you tested this in SCORM Cloud to see if you experience the same result?
Hi Leslie! I have been trying, but the file will not upload. I think it may be blocked by our systems.... I'm trying to get someone else to upload it for me!
Well let me know if you'd like me to do so :) You are welcome to share your .story file here.
I have the exact same issue. I have uploaded mine into scorm and get the same thing. Sometimes it takes up to 5 minutes for the slide to advance to the next screen. My .story is attached. Please help. I've been working on this for the last two weeks. I have added and deleted things trying to fix, but to no avail.

Hi Rajah! Thanks for sharing your file. Is there a particular slide that I'm looking at here? The ones I've looked at are set to advance by user, so I'm not sure what you mean by taking so long to advance to the next screen?
If it is the same issue as I am having, it is after the user clicks to advance.. the screen freezes or shows the loading icon for 10 seconds or so before the next slide appears.
I have got it down to 6 seconds by stripping out any high resolution images, reducing the audio quality, unchecking HTML5, and taking out the javascript I had on one page. But it is still not ideal!!
The course is down to 18MB in size, but I have plenty of non-articulate courses in the system that are larger and run ok.
when you click the link on the menu screen, the "thinking" circle spins forever before each it changes to the next slide. It also does it after slide one..that is the longest delay
Clicking ANY of the 8 links does this.
I have made courses that are much larger than this one..and I haven't had this type problem. I have one .story that's 6gb!
Hi Rajah,
I tested your file and uploaded it here to SCORM Cloud. It's working as expected for me - but you mentioned clicking on the menu and I did want to point out that using the settinf of "locked" as a part of your player menu navigation will work as described here:
Sorry, I meant the menu that I made (The second slide). After the 1st slide there is a 2 minute delay after clicking next, and the course advancing to the next slide. Then on that "GMP menu" slide, clicking on any one of the links...especially the Maintenance one, takes about 4 minutes before it goes to the slide that the text is linked to. It does this in both my LMS and in Scormcloud. It does it for others as well.
Ok thanks for clarifying Rajah - I took a look at that slide specifically and didn't see any loading issues with the course I loaded at scorm cloud. You do have to wait until the slide's timeline ends as it looks like you've locked down the overall timeline and even covered the links initially with another rectangle. I'm not sure what speed internet you're using - but I'm outside my house today so getting around 25-30 mbps.
could it be issues specific to my workplace's network bandwidth?
Hi Rajah,
I'd check into that and what browser you're using. I'm using Chrome and Firefox mostly to view courses in - what were you viewing the courses in? Were you able to test my link as well and experience the same behavior?
no. The link no longer works.
I tried it in Chrome and IE. I use Chrome exclusively
Hi Rajah,
Try this one.
Hi! Yes, this one is doing exactly the same as mine - it looks like it is pages that are set up with lots of links to other pages that slow it down - mine is slowest when I leave or return to a customised menu page. Unfortunately, I have several of these, and they are crucial to the course....
Hi Rebecca,
Are you able to confirm what the broadband internet speed is or what particular browser you're using?
Hi! I'm using Internet Explorer, and my speed is 57.42mbps. But my course is going out gloablly next week and will be accessed via much weaker connections and multiple browsers.
I'm using Chrome
I just talked to my IT guy and he said our network is shared with all other sites but it's 10mbps. That doesn't sound right; maybe he misunderstood? I have 100mbps at my house and I got the delay when I took the course there. It wasn't as severe, like 5-10 seconds between loading, but I noticed it. Like Rebecca, I thought it was the customized menu, so I deleted that menu and tried making all the scenes flow in series and it still hung up between transitioning slides (No transition animations, btw).
Hi Rebecca,
Speed sounds fine - so I think we'll want to take a look at your course as well and anything else on your system that could be attributing to the slow playback - as even on my set up today (24 mbps and Chrome) I didn't have any problem with Rajah's course in SCORM Cloud. It is likely best to continue this discussion with our Support engineers so that they can gather a bit more information - so you can reach out and share a copy of the course there.
Rajah,
10 would be a big difference from 100 - but it sounds like overall speed may not be the issue based on our varying set ups and results. If you'd like to connect with our team as well, we can do a bit more individualized troubleshooting. Please let me know the case number once you submit and I'll follow along as well.
My case number is 00622290
Thanks Rajah - I'll follow along as our team takes a look.
