I have used the "restrictive' setting on the built-in drop down menu in the past. However, in the course I'm currently building, it will not work. It won't let me advance to the next slide or any for that matter. Why is this happening? Anybody have a solution or has this happened to you?

if you want to restrict the menu then use Locked the menu i the settings. if you donot want it then set it to FREE.

Hi Robbin,
If it's just that one file that is behaving oddly, I'd confirm first that you're working with local project files and then try to import it into a new Storyline project.
