Windows 8 and Storyline Preview

Dec 19, 2012

I have a trial version of Storyline, which I'm running on a Mac using a virtual machine and Windows 8.  When I Preview a story, if a slide has any graphics on it, the Preview capability seems to freeze up.  The problem isn't the VM (I've tried a couple, same result), so I figure it's either Storyline or Windows 8 (or the particular version of Windows 8 I'm running).  Storyline is one amazing tool, but before purchasing it, I'd like to get it working correctly on my Mac.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.  -- Michael

Hey Michael, welcome!

Hmm, thanks for posting. It may be your Storyline installation causing the issues, or maybe an issue of where the graphics are coming from. Are the graphics you've inserted located within your VM as well, or are they from the Mac side?

Are you experiencing any other irregularities or erratic behavior when using Storyline?

Thanks!

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the quick response!   In a very simple test file, I made absolutely sure that the graphic came from the VM side.  And I also tried pasting a screen grab from the Windows clipboard.  Same problem.  As I said, I have VM sharing off, as recommended, so I can't even see the Mac side when using Storyline.

Here's something funny I just discovered:

  • I start the preview and nothing appears, it seems frozen.  The only thing on the page is a frozen round "wait" icon.  But I then resize the Preview window, and the page suddenly appears!
  • Continuing the test, I then put a trigger on the graphic to go to the next slide when clicked.  I restart Preview:  Frozen, with nothing appearing.  I then resize the window and the graphic appears.  I then click the graphic with the trigger, and nothing happens.  But when I resize the window again, the trigger activates, displaying the next page!

As for whether there are any other irregularities with Storyline, I don't think so, but of course it's hard to tell, as I'm new to the tool.  Things seem to work pretty intuitively, which is fantastic.  Not absolutely everything, but that may just be how Storyline works.  For example, I can't seem to delete a selected object by pressing the Delete key, only by cutting the object (which, of course, places the object on the clipboard replacing whatever is there, which isn't always what I want).  But as I said, that may just be how Storylline works.

Thanks.

Thanks for the additional info, Michael! And glad to hear that, for the most part, you're enjoying Storyline .

It sounds like the best place to start troubleshooting what you're experiencing would be to try a quick repair installation, as noted in this article. If you're still having trouble after that, please feel free to contact our support team for more help. Thanks!

Hi Peter,

I solved the problem:  I needed to install the most recent version of Windows 8.

I was using trial/evaluation versions of the virtual machine and Windows 8 on my Mac, since the only reason I have to run Windows on my Mac is to use Storyline.  None of the smaller suggested fixes worked, which is another way of saying that Storyline, Flash, and the VM were all okay.  So finally I purchased and installed the latest version of Windows 8, whose earlier versions have had their share of bugs. And when I reopened Storyline, Preview mode worked great!

Anyway, thank you for your quick response and suggestions.
