Windows security permissions on file reset after saving

Sep 29, 2015

We have two people working on the same Storyline 2 file (not simultaneously). The file is stored locally on the PC. When user #1 saves the file, the Windows security permissions on the file are being reset, removing all other users access to the file. When user #2 tries open the file, they receive a permission error in Articulate. We can reset the permissions manually, but when that user saves, the permissions are changed again. Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Hi Matthew,

Typically when we hear about the "file has been locked or is in use by another process' type of error with security or permissions it indicates the file has some element of corruption. I typically am able to open a file with that error message, if it's not corrupt, by opening Storyline first and then browsing for the file vs. opening it directly from Windows explorer. Have you tried that?

Hi Louise,

Sorry to hear about the difficulty you've run into. I'm not sure what you meany by CTRL delete - but you may want to look at importing the file into a new file as described here.

You could also look at searching through your temp files for an earlier version of it.

Here's how to check:

1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer:

%appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.

3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

Also, be sure to always create, edit, and publish projects on your local hard drive. Working from a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior due to latency, such as file corruption, an inability to save changes, and loss of resources. See this article for details.
