Working through the free trial-anyone to help?

Hello all! I'm a one-man training/development machine for a large, publicly trade company. I'm evaluating some tools to get approved for authoring a ton of content. I like Storyline 2 (waiting to get access to 360, issues on the site) however I find some finicky things about it. Mostly in the triggers. I'm having a hard time consistently getting new layers to trigger. However, sometimes I do it without issue.
I think my confusion comes from how triggers post to the base slide but not the layers themselves.
Anyone who can lend a helping hand would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Kyle! If you don't mind sharing your .story project file, or even just an example slide, with me, I'd be happy to take a look at how you've set up your trigger pane. Just use the Add Attachment button at the bottom of the reply window.
In the mean time, you might find this tutorial on Working with Triggers in Storyline 360 to be helpful.
You're awesome! Thanks. Although the triggers are set to show the neon green caption layer, the preview doesn't allow it to happen.
Hi Kyle! Thanks so much for sending screenshots of your trigger pane. Before I give any recommendations, I'd like to know exactly how you want the user to navigate on this slide.
My goal is for the caption to enter when the user hits next button. And once we're done with that portion, I'd like it to disapear and then move to the next base slide.
Hi Kyle:
Offhand, I'd say you might be looking to change the State of your caption from an Initial Set State of Hidden (change this in the Slide first) to Normal when the user clicks the button (?)
You can then use additional triggers, or more likely, placement on the Timeline, to control when items appear and disappear. The only problem with this approach is having set points on the Timeline to control when things start and stop in terms of playback.
Nicole Legault has several great examples of how to use cue points on the Timeline in conjunction with Pause/Continue Timeline playback, so you can draw ideas from there.
If I can dig one or two of these examples up, I'll add the Community link(s) to them here.
It's a simple technique that I've tweaked and use to great effect in many of my projects where I need a certain level of granular control of timing when things appear/disappear.
Good luck with your project!

Ah, okay. And the caption you're referring to is the green circle, correct?
Based on your screenshots, it looks like you have your next button navigating to various layers and slides. The next button can only lead to one place, either a layer or a slide, not both. As an alternative, you might consider using a custom button on your base layer that will allow the user to access the 'Before Day 1' layer. Once the layer opens, then the next button will be enabled, and the user can click next to go to the next slide.
I've attached a quick demo I threw together to show you exactly what I mean. Take a look at it and let me know what you think!
And just in case you're interested, here's a great tutorial on working with triggers that you might find helpful.
Mark, thanks so much, I didn't realize that the next button could only be used for one thing. Thanks for the thoughtful response! When it comes to playback, is there a way to keep it dependent on when a user clicks?
this is very helpful! thanks for the link as well. Didn't realize that about the trigger button
No problem, Kyle! So glad you got it sorted out!
One more question. I am dedicating layers to individual text boxes. I want those text boxes to stay anchored on the page as the new ones appear. What in the settings will do that?
Hi Kyle, you'll want to make sure that 'Hide other slide layers' is un-checked within Slide Layer Properties:
