My aim is to make the existing file easier to manipulate amendments and easier user access. Any guidance appreciated. At least if we get this going, the coding used will be used on other similar .story files

A couple of things that may help you. You might get away with these duplicate triggers on slide 1.9, but they may have potential for creating problems. I would change them.

Otherwise, everything looks good, except that the buttons don't change color. That is because the variables never change. SL has no built-in method for changing variables, so you have to create your own triggers. Put them at the end of each topic, so that when the topic is complete, the variable is changed. For example, on the last slide of the Definitions scene, put this trigger:

Be sure it is ABOVE the Jump to trigger in the list, or it will jump and not change the variable. Also, go to the properties and set slide 1.9 to Reset to initial condition on revisit. That way you are certain that the timeline restarts, and your triggers will work.
