Zoom Feature Fails to Begin & End a Slide - Storyline 3

Dec 06, 2017

Storyline 3 zoom feature is not functioning as Storyline 2 had. It fails to begin and end a slide even though the timeline shows it stretches from beginning to end of slide. Duplicating the slide does not duplicate the action. Expanding the zoom time (not area) does not seem to work properly. Bizarre. Reloaded sw - same.

Hey CS and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)

I see where you reached out here as well, so I know this must be slowing you down. I'd love to help you out with this.

I'm seeing the slides zoom in as expected when previewing your course. You can check out my quick Peek video here to see. Where were you experiencing the difficulty? Was it once published?

As Crystal mentioned in the other thread, the zoom region will zoom out at the end of the slide.

Hi CS - I see that you responded to the course in Review. I just want to include it here for anyone following along.

Slide 1: Greetings and thank you for your time and expertise. I have never had this problem in SL2. We recently upgraded to SL3. The results are consistent when created on different computers. Slide 1 doesn't begin in zoom as shown in the video unless the user clicks the reply button.

Slide 2: I initially duplicated slide 1 but expanded the zoom for the entire slide. When I view it either in preview or published, it doesn't zoom until 12sec and then inexplicably zooms out. Read: it neither begins nor ends zoomed in. (The video here begins in zoom but does not end in zoom.) Also inexplicably, if I click the replay button the zoom begins perfectly - but still ends wrong.

Slide 3 should zoom at 1sec and last for the duration of the slide. (This is the first countdown slide.) After 12secs the zoom fails (as displayed in this video).

Slide 4 is supposed to begin in zoom and essentially tilt down at the 3sec mark (as it does here). When I view it either in preview or published, it does not begin zoomed in. It then zooms out at the 13sec mark.

As mentioned above, the zoom out at the end of the slide is expected, but I'm seeing the behavior that you mention 'wanting' in your comments. The Review that you are watching is my preview of your course. I did not change anything.

Have you published this course yet? Do you experience the same results?

Hopefully this will amply show my zoom angst.  This is slide1 by itself.  Slide 1 is configured to start zoomed in.  It does not.  I attempt to double the zoom duration from 3s to 6s.  It does not zoom appropriately.

Only if I click "replay" does it zoom as intended.   When published this slide works exactly the same - fails unless the learner happens to replay a single slide.

Well CS - I appreciate you continuing to share your zoom angst. Something is certainly buggy there because my first test was successful and that was the recording that I shared with you...and now, I'm certainly seeing the behavior you are seeing. I thought I might have been going a tad crazy, but my team has confirmed that this is a reported bug. So, I apologize. The inconsistency in itself is an issue that I will be adding to this report when I attach this thread.

Current workaround is to have them start at about 0.25 sec into the slide instead of the beginning.

I wanted to share some information on how we define bugs and how we tackle them when they occur.

Thanks for your patience (and persistence).

CS Doffing

Thank you for your reply and confirming the zoom start is a bug.  What about the other zoom problems I am experiencing.  My zoom duration (if the default is 3s and I expand it to 6s) it doesn't double in time as I showed in the last attachment.  I am also unable to end a slide while zoomed in (this attachment).

Hi there, CS.  I saw that behavior in your project when I initially viewed it, but after adjusting the zoom duration on the timeline, I was able to make the zoom last through to the end of the timeline.  Check out my Peek here.

Here's a new project I mocked up on my own with the zoom lasting until the end.

Let me know if adjusting the zoom on the timeline helps when you try it yourself.  Thanks!

CS Doffing

Thanks for your support.  I too was able to zoom to the end both with your attachment and working on other project.   However, I just realized the zoom function does not work when updating SL2 courses.  (It works only when clicking the replay, like above.) Huge disappointment.  :-(

However I can create multiple zooms to pan a slide and can now extend a zoom duration.  I just cannot begin in zoom.  So I am closer to achieving my zoom zen.

Crystal Horn

Hey CS.  Now I'm invested in getting you to zoom zen.

Tell me more about updating your SL2 courses...I added a zoom region starting at .5 s and lasting through to the end of the timeline in an SL2 course.  I then upgraded that course to SL3, and the zoom function worked the same way.

We'll get these ripples ironed out!

Hi there.  Submitted is the SL3 and the backup it made for SL2.  SL2 zooms work optimally.  SL3 not so much.  Another aspect lost in the sw upgrade conversion is the layer hover function.  Slide 1.4  "Mark Ballot as Return" button should trigger a layer and advance to the next slide.  It does so in the SL2 backup, but not in the SL3 version.  Nor does it reveal in Slide 1.9 the layer tool tip as it does in the backup.  Alas!

Crystal Horn

Hi CS.  I am definitely seeing an issue with the "show layer" triggers while the object is in an active zoom region.  I'm going to document that behavior for our team.

In the meantime, instead of showing a layer, can you create triggers to change the states of those objects?  So for 1.9, have the tool tip on the base layer and then create a trigger to show the tool tip (maybe going from hidden to normal state).  For 1.4, the workaround would be putting the shape that should show while hovering over "Mark ballot as Return" on the base layer also.

I also see the zoom regions behaving with a little "jumpiness" when flowing from one zoom directly into another, whereas in Storyline 2 it works smoothly.  I don't think it's an HTML5 issue at this point, but I'm digging into that as well.

Thanks for sharing your file for testing!  I'll keep you posted.

CS Doffing

Here is a similar pain that does not have to do with a conversion, but it again shows the conflict added with the zoom function.  Enclosed, a slide using hovering of layers - no issues.  The second acted very differently with zoom and did not allow for the layer trigger to work.   This was resolved by the below solution.  (Total Time Debugging - 3hrs)

Bonus I found the solution.  Zoom necessitates removing the Restore Mouse on Leave on the Trigger.

I just ran into something similar in an older course.  Seems to occur when the zoom box is set to "very slow".  In the timeline view, the zoom works normally.  When in the review mode, it zooms in, but then suddenly zooms in again and will not zoom all the way out.  Published course does the same thing. I have custom continue and previous buttons so they cannot be accessed when this happens.  I have included a Peek example of this issue.  I have SL360 updated to very latest.

 See Peek video here.

Hey everybody. I'm excited to let you know that we just released update 3 for Storyline 3! It includes new features and fixes - check them all out here.

One of the fixes addresses an issue where a zoom region set to start at the beginning of the timeline does not work properly.

This issue should now be fixed in both Storyline 3 and Storyline 360.

Here’s where you can download and install the latest version of Storyline 3. Let me know how you make out!

Ren Gomez

Hi Jeffrey,

We just released another update for Articulate 360 and included a few important fixes that you'll see in the release notes here.

The issue you were running into with zoom regions with a transition speed of "very slow" didn't zoom in completely has been corrected as well.

Just launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button for Storyline 360. Details here!
