Audio in a marker hover
Jul 09, 2012
Is there a way to change when the audio in a marker starts? I'm currently working on a project that has several markers per slide. When I move my cursor around, if I slightly move over a marker the audio starts (before the hover label opens). It can't be stopped and I'll end up having 5 different audio tracks playing at the same time.
I wanted to make it so the audio wouldn't start until the marker's label was fully open. This way when the cursor is moved off the marker, the audio stops.
Thanks to anyone who can help!!

One of the ways to do this is to add your audio to separate layers and use a mouse hover trigger on each of your markers to play the sound. This gives you full control over the start of your audio with the added benefit of special feature of this type of trigger.
Show layer "your sound layer 1" when Mouse hovered over "your marker" checkbox next to Restore on mouse leave.
Now whenever you mouse over the marker it'll show this layer. Since the layer contains audio only, it'll play the audio and stop when the mouse leaves the object when the layer is hidden.
Nice elegant solution from Steve
Hey Desiree, out of curiosity, how did you add & configure your audio on your markers? The marker feature is designed so that the content of each marker (including audio) is only active for one marker at a time. So if one marker's audio is playing, the other markers' audio should stop. Are you seeing something different?
Jeanette,
At first I added the audio into the actual marker. The audio would start if I had a marker "fully" hovered with the label pop up completely open, and stop when I removed the mouse. However, if I moved my mouse fast over multiple buttons at a time before the label even had time to load, the audio for each button would start and I couldn't stop it (unless I left that slid all together).
I did what Steve suggested and took the audio out of all my markers and triggered them to "show" audio layers, and now it works great!!! Thanks again Steve!
Thanks Desiree! I'm so glad Steve's suggestion works for you!
However, we'd love it if you could submit your original file as a support case so that we can log that problem of audio overlapping. You shouldn't have to go through the extra work of creating a layer and triggers - it should just work. Thanks!
I'm having many issues with audio overlapping and am trying to fix them with triggers.
I'm trying to complete something similar to Desiree, however I want the audio/timeline to pause while the marker is clicked. When the marker is minimized, I want the base audio/timeline to resume. Is this feasible?
I followed Steve's suggestion, and it works for Desiree's situation, but I want the marker audio to play after it's clicked(not just hovered). There is no restore option in this situation.
Edited to add: Would this be the correct trigger sequence to add to make it work?
Hey Laura! Yes, it sure looks like that would work, as long as in your layer properties you've marked "Pause timeline of base layer." Did you give it a try? Is it behaving the way you wanted?
Hi Jeanette,
I'm still in the process of updating my slides, but on the ones I've checked, it seems to be working! Thanks!
Laura
Awesome Laura - glad to hear it!
Hi Steve,
I am using the audio layers just like you suggested in the above. It is works great, but I have one more question about this.
I have a slide layer (not the base layer) with voice-over. The layer has several markers with voice-over as well. So, I set it up like you mentioned. The thing is that in the layer settings you can check the box to pause the timeline of the base layer but not of the other layers, this means that the voice-over of the layer and the voice-over of any of the markers will overlap if a marker is hovered over.
Do you know how to fix this?
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Chris
Hi Jeannette, I experienced the same problem as Desiree with regard to audio overlapping on markers. It's also curious that the markers do not pause the timeline of the base layer (or give you the ability to do so) particularly when narration is on the base layer. My slide had 5 audio recordings overlapping on preview when you swipe your mouse over the markers! Steve's suggestion works great and I don't have a problem with overlapping anymore, but I agree, it would be nice not to have to add more work. I'm just so happy another person ran into this and that there was a solution!
I had this issue last week, sometimes it doesnt happen, then you send it to your client and look like a prat.
I did the different layers, this is a big bug in my mind
Hi, I was also experiencing this issue, but this is what I did and it worked fine for my purposes. I did not create separate layers, rather just a couple of extra triggers:

I just ran into this issue. It didn't occur to me to test moving my mouse willy-nilly all over the slide, so of course, someone else found the issue. Grrr
Steve's solution works great, but it is a workaround to a bug in my opinion.
yes and one that I fall into every time.
I've just run into the same problem with audio on one marker continuing to run when another marker is clicked. I have all the markers set to audio only so clicking is required to open the marker. I think this is a bug that, if fixed, would save a lot of time versus creating layers for the marker audio. I will submit a support case.
Does anyone know if this bug has been fixed? I just went back into the program where the problem cropped up (the course was published/posted several months ago), republished, and the marker audio now works correctly - it starts when a marker is clicked and ends when another marker is clicked.
Hi Harriet! I cannot track down any information regarding this issue nor does it appear that anyone in this thread submitted a case. I am glad that it is working for you at this point and I will ask that you submit a case if it happens again so that we can figure out how to handle
I have added audio to the markers and audio is not audio when I publish
Hi Anne,
It looks like I also answered your thread over here.
HI Ashley
Thank you for the answer.
I deleted the slide and inserted the markers one by one and it worked.
Thanks Anne for the updates.
