16pt or 18pt font size for mobile devices?

May 15, 2017

Hi everyone. Has anyone increased their body font size? I have been using 16pt font for body/paragraph text since Articulate Studio 2009. I recently received a request to increase the font size for mobile learners. Normally our learners view courses on a computer monitor and our story size is set for 1024 x 768, soon to go widescreen. I have been advised that customers are starting to use mobile devices, specifically tablets, although the small text issue came from a project manager who viewed the course on her iPhone.

Also, we only create one course which runs on all devices, tablets, phones and computer monitors. We want to avoid managing a mobile version of a monitor screen course.

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Hi Mary Ann. A 16 pt font should be fine, but it really depends on the needs of your audience. You may want to do some experiments with a cross-section of your user base, using different devices to see which font size works best across the board. You may also find some of the tips in our free e-book, The Definitive Guide to Multi Device E-Learning may be of help.

I know you mentioned that you're working in Articulate Studio 09. Have you had a chance to check out Articulate Studio 360? I ask because Articulate Studio 360 includes our new responsive mobile player which supports mobile gestures like pinch-zoom—making text size a little less of a concern for smaller screened devices.

I hope this helps you out!
