Accessibility controls - instructions for learners

Aug 16, 2021

Hi everyone.

I'm interested to know how designers are informing learners about the accessibility controls available to them in SL360.

For example, I've made the accessibility control icon visible for my course but should I point it out early in the course? Should I provide an explanation of what 'zoom to fit', 'accessible text' and 'keyboard shortcuts' mean? Should I add a note to say learners need to use Shift+? to display what the keyboard shortcuts actually are?

If there's a good generic script that can be fitted into an 'Accessibility instructions' screen in my courses that covers all of this I'd be very interested. Thanks for any help!

I am looking into this also.  For me, the best way to introduce the Accessibility controls and how they work would be to have some kind of lightbox or branching in the beginning.  Something like, If you are interested in learning how to use the accessibility controls click here.  That way it's an option for the user, but not required.  However, I don't have any script for it yet but it would be great for Articulate to offer a standard explanation that could be edited for customization.

I did a quick test on the keyboard shortcuts, e.g. Ctrl+Alt+. (period) to move to the next slide. This only works if you've enabled the in-built 'Prev' and 'Next' buttons and not if you've created your own navigation buttons.

So, if you've created your own navigation buttons, then you'll need to add appropriate 'when the use presses Ctrl+Alt+.' and  'when the use presses Ctrl+Alt+,' triggers (with any appropriate conditions) to all slides to enable the keyboard navigation shortcuts and associated instructions (Shift+?).

I've put together the below instructions which could be made visible when the learner selects an Accessibility icon/button (available at all times) or just displayed on a slide early on in every course. How does this sound?

Accessibility

This course meets Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA. To access additional accessibility controls, select the ‘gear’ icon (bottom left) at any time. These controls include:

Zoom to fit – allows you to view the course using the zoom settings in your browser to make slides bigger and easier to see (laptop and desktop computers only).

Accessible text – allows you to make all course text accessible so it can be accessed via screen readers.

Keyboard shortcuts – allows you to use keyboard shortcuts (currently enabled) to operate and navigate the course (laptop and desktop computers only). For a full list of keyboard shortcuts press Shift+? at any time.
