If you use the Classic Player, you have the ability to adjust the colours of the player background and frame to better suit your slides. However, if you are using the Modern Player, your only two options are to use a light or dark background. This can still maker a significant difference in the appearance of your slides, depending on the overall background of your presentation.
The two images below show a simple menu slide in the modern player with both the dark background (top image) and light background (bottom image):

Nothing wrong with the modern player, I use it all the time, but you simply restrict yourself to the two background options.
