Sometimes you can get older versions of the Poser software cheap to free - Last year around Christmas they had tons of giveaways & previous version of Poser was free as well as many models.
If you head to Daz3d as Steve suggested, they have a competing software called Daz Studio 4.5 which is similar - but free right now.
But as for ease of use - I haven't tried since the early versions, but they were pretty easy... I think my 10 yr old was playing with it too at the time!
Its pretty easy to use. I've used it before when I'm doing digital artwork and pose the "models" . It's not any groundbreaking 3d software, but if you plan on just using it for simple images for anatomy courses it should be fine. Plus there is a community that creates free models for it. They even have skeletons. For simple anatomy shots, go with the free version.
Thanks for the replies, I have a deal to get poser plus manga studios for £90 so may go with that.
I have one final question, I have seen images and tutorials for skeletons and muscle groups are these built in or do I need to get hold of some models?
Only 2 basic male and female models are included with the system. It has been a while, but there might be a skeleton too. I do know there is a community that will have free models available for download but most of these are aimed at the fantasy/RPG genre not for medical use. Or at least I've never searched for models specifically to be used for medical presentations or purposes.
Here is a link to medical related models you can buy/download for Poser LINK
I know it says you can create your custom models, but Poser is not where you can create your 3D models in. You only import the models or accessories and then ...well.. pose them. It's been a while since I used it, but it will have a slight learning curve if you are not familiar with 3D modeling/animating.
What version of manga studios is it? Debut or Ex? Ex is the better version, it has a lot more features.
Manga Studio is more geared toward comic book development. It has a lot of nice features that speed up the process. It is very different on how it uses layers and layer types. If your coming in from photoshop, it still has a steep learning curve at first but a few tutorials later and everything makes sense.
An interesting thread ... Have played with Daz in the past but couldn't get on with it, probably as I don't have any real experience of 3D modelling (well, not since a Uni project in the 90s!).
Is there a way to create new characters in the current version of Poser? I know it ships with a few already, but creating people of different age/race would be key for me.
There are a few built in character types that include different races. The face generator is also pretty keen. Has sliders for ethnicity and age. Pretty easy to modify the base characters for variations.

It's pretty easy to use. Have used Poser for a few years. There's a cheaper version than the Pro:

Not sure what the feature differences are, I've always used the non-pro version. If you need some models, browse through Daz3D.

Actually the newer versions come with 5GB of models and accessories/materials : http://poser.smithmicro.com/freefigures.html
Theres a tutorial here for how to use the included skeletons & mats for medical illustration:

Wow, it's changed quite a bit since the last time i've used it. I might download it again and see what's new.
Thank you those are both really helpful, may get the anatomy pack as well
Ex was the free version so I got both today, playing with it later
