When creating new slide master layouts, it's important to mark the placeholder content as "Title" (see below).
I don't know it that's possible to change after the layout has been used, but it's worth the try (make sure that the selected layout has the right text placeholder marked as "Title").
If that doesn't fix it, I'm afraid that the only solution is to copy/paste manually.
That said, any reason why such an extensive course? 600 slides sounds like a lot.
