Best way to create a course, one or various .story files

Mar 29, 2019

Hi all,

Sorry for this probably stupid question, but I am starting to create different courses and I have a lot of doubts.

The first one is how to create a course in the best way, I mean, I am creating a course with different lessons and tests for each lesson.

In each lesson I include videos, sound files, images, etc, so a lesson can have a lot of information.

I think it is better to create a single .story file per lesson, even in the case a lesson is too heavy, it could be divided in two. Because if I create all the course in a single .story file, maybe it is more difficult to be managed by the LMS and the participants when they open the course, in their devices, can take much more time.

What do you think? Is there any additional problem I can find if I create some .story files for the same course?

Thank you very much for your support!!!!

Hi Allende.  I suppose in the end it comes down to the experience you want your learners to have.  Both ways are perfectly fine and an LMS should be able to handle either method with no problem.  You may have to take into consideration though the bandwidth availability of your users as if they are on slow internet connections or restricted bandwidth then multiple courses (.story files) may be your better route.

I have recently done a project where I planned it all to be in a single course with it broken down into multiple sections (11 - each with its own sub sections).  I planned to do it this way so that I could implement a gamification element that would have taken too long (and cost a lot more) to do via the LMS.  In the end we decided not implement that feature so I split the course down into 11 separate modules (.story files), which actually worked out a bit better as the course became alot bigger than I originally thought it would be.

So in short, if you want to implement features like a user enters their name, chooses an avatar, etc then a single course would work in your favour, unless you can somehow pass these variables backwards and forwards between your LMS.  If you went for the multiple module approach the learner would have to enter their name, choose an avatar, etc every time they started a new course.

Hope that helps.
