Best way to manage video content

Aug 14, 2015

My course consists of a number of short videos in addition to regular Storyline slides. Is it better to embed the videos on a slide, creating a course with a huge file size that I'd ftp to my website? Or is it better to upload the videos to a media file and access them via links within SL? When I've done that, the video opens in a separate window and the user has to work their way back to the course. It would be great if the video could play in a lightbox rather than a separate window, but I don't see a way to do that on my Wordpress site. How do you deal with video content?

What is the best way to incorporate video in my course?

My general philosophy on engineering (design) is that more moving parts means more ways and places for a product to break.

Making links and uploading separate video files gives you more chances to make mistakes.

Closing windows and getting back gives users more chances to make mistakes, and for some of them to get distracted.

All other things being equal, these two reasons seem to dictate keeping them together.

For me, the compelling reason to embed is that closing other windows and working themselves back to the course increases the cognitive demand on learners, siphoning off resources that are not now directed towards learning. For less competent users, this can amount to a complete disconnect from your content.

Anybody: is there any truth to the theory that kids are loosing the ability to use devices with keyboards and mice because of the ubiquity of touchable devices?
