best way to start?

Dec 08, 2014

I'm pretty new to e-learning and the company I work for has done pretty much only click-and-read type of stuff. I kind of want to introduce more interactivity but do you think I should test the waters a bit before going whole-hog and developing a big huge module? Does anyone have suggestions or experience regarding how to ease learners into the idea of more interactive courses?

Is "suggestions or experience" a spam link for anyone else?

To your question -

Start looking at examples! Here's the Articulate Showcase: https://www.articulate.com/community/showcase.php

That should at least get your mind going. I'd also recommend the following books:

  • Design for How People Learn (Julie Dirkson)
  • E-Learning and the Science of Instruction (Ruth Clark et. al.) - especially the chapter on media
  • Michael Allen's Guide to E-Learning (old but still relevant)

You shouldn't need to "ease" learners in, I'm sure they'll be very happy to have more interactive and engaging courses to take. More interactive doesn't necessarily mean harder to take. However, you should do a small pilot run with a few learners just to ensure that they are indeed learning what you set them out to learn, and that your user interface is understandable.
