Biometric Validation

Jun 14, 2016

Hi all, I am looking at designing a number of induction modules to be completed by sub-contractors on our construction sites. These will be completed before they arrive on site. Our Head of Safety has asked me how I am going to validate that the correct individual has completed each module, and that there is not someone in the office completing the modules on behalf of each inductee.

I am thinking of taking a photo using the laptop webcam at some point during each module. I feel that this would involve a trigger, i.e 'Take a photo when the timeline starts on slide 10', but don't even know where to start. Any guidance on this would be extremely helpful.

Thanks

Chris

Thanks for the reply Matthew,

We are using an LMS, but the sub-contractors (a different company) will be using guest access and will only be able to access the induction modules. We would have no control over the log-ins and passwords once we issued them.

The modules will be a pre-requisite for access to the construction site, so permission to take a photo should not be a problem. (No photo - no access)

I agree that there is a cultural issue if this sort of thing is going on (I think it is more widespread in the construction industry than we like to let on), but these are external companies where we have little jurisdiction. I can see where the Head of Safety is coming from, we also need evidence that 'that person' completed 'that module' in case something goes wrong. (Sub-contractors have tried to wriggle out of any blame by claiming they did not receive training.)

These modules will be completed at the sub-contractors premises, so it may be that all users will complete the modules on the same PC/ laptop.

You mention that it is possible to take a photo, any idea how I would get Storyline 2 to trigger that?

Thanks Matthew.

Looks like it could be the answer, I take it this could be triggered by a variable i.e Timeline starts on slide 1.10?

Our Head of Safety still wants them to complete the training. Not the approach I would take to be honest. What we are basically saying is 'We don't trust you!', not the best start to a relationship, and your right, a simple signature should suffice.

I am not sure what devices they are using but if it is tablets/phones you may be able to link to a site that captures a digital signature. I have had to do this for contract signatures a number of times recently.

I don't see taking a photo is going to make much difference as the system will have to ask for their permission. If they are going to get someone to complete them for everyone, then after the first attempt they will know when they need the person to appear to be doing the module and will just get them to sit in for the photo.

The only fool proof way to ensure the right person is completing the training really is to have them do it on-site as part of their site induction.

Thanks Tristan,
Is there a way that a laptop could allow a photo at any point during a module, without having to ask permission each and every time. Digital signatures could be a way forward, but I've got the same problem of is it the correct individual.
The idea of having the sub-contractors complete the induction before they start on site is to free up our manager's time, so negating the point of developing eLearning modules.
Probably not the right forum, but how widespread is this problem, and what do others do?

You could activate the webcam if they give permission on the desktop, I am not sure where you would save the image you would need to send to your server, I expect your LMS would not save it and as you are using guest access it wouldn't be assigned to a user.

I would agree with Tristan really the only guaranteed method that the correct person is taking the course is to check photo ID before they sit down and take it
