Branching within a slide
Aug 18, 2020
I am building a Jeopardy game in Articulate. My issue is how to "blank out" the questions already asked on the Jeopardy board slide.
So there are 5 topics with 5 questions each, totaling 25 squares. If I choose topic one for $200 and then topic three for $600, when I return to the Jeopardy board, those two options should be grayed out. Because this is not linear (the students can choose any square on the board) I am not sure how to do this or if it can be done.
HELP!!!

Hi Sandra,
Yes, it can be done, but it is hard to know what you are doing with out some idea about how you've set your project up. My first thought is to suggest you might just hide the text of your question by using the hidden state.

Here's a webinar that may help.

Hi Dave.
Thanks for the rapid response!!
So the game is fairly simple…a couple of intro slides and then the game goes to the Jeopardy board…each of the 5 categories is set up with 5 questions ranging from $200 -$1000 in value.
On the main Jeopardy board, each dollar value is a hyperlink to a question slide. Then there is an answer link on the question slide that links to an answer layer on the question slide. On the answer layer is a hyperlink to return to the main board for the next question.

So if I click on Call Handling for $200 the question slide opens:
[cid:image008.jpg@01D67572.A2216F30]
When I click the answer link, it shows the Answer layer of the slide:

On the answer layer of the slide is a link back to the Jeopardy main board.
I could duplicate the main board slide several times but there is no way to “program” what to black out on the next main board slide depending on which questions they choose.
Can Articulate even do this?

1. Add a Disabled state to each of the question buttons.
2. Add a trigger to each of the question buttons that changes the state of button xyz when user clicks button xyz. This trigger needs to be placed BEFORE the JumpToSlide trigger.
Hello Michael.
THANK YOU for your quick response!!
I put the hidden trigger in place of disabled and then created the shape that is the hyperlink to the question slide and placed it on top… so when I click the question button, the text does go away but have to click a second time to get the hyperlink to work (fixed that)
The problem now is that, when they return to the main Jeopardy board, the question button does not stay blanked out, I guess the board is resetting to show all text.
Ideas??

Hi Sandra,
It sounds like your slide may be set to reset to the initial state. In the slide properties you'll want to make sure that the slide is set to "resume saved state." More details here! Also, I'll be hosting a two part series on creating a Jeopardy-style game in September if you'd like to sign up at training.articulate.com!
Hi Elizabeth. Thank you once again for the quick response!
Your slide setting worked – at least in Preview.
However, when I publish the presentation the slide does not retain the resume saved state???

Hi Sandra! I'm sorry that's happening. Can you share your file so we can take a look?
Also, I just thought I'd point out that when you respond directly from your email, your signature is appended to the message. You may want to pop in there and edit out any personal information you don't want to share with the community.
Hi Sarah.
Don’t know whether this will make it through the email systems but here is the story…in preview it works perfectly – in publishing –not so much!! LOL

Hi Sandra. Unfortunately, replying via e-mail does not allow attachments to come through. Be sure to click 'View' in your e-mail to pop into the forums.
You can then click the 'Add Attachment' option in the bottom left of the reply window to attach your file.
the attachment thing is not working either... plan B??
Sorry for the trouble, Sandra. Would you be willing to submit a case so that we can help you?
