Calculations

May 10, 2011

I'm developing a training that includes a lot of calculations.  For example, I need to create a slide that shows a person how to calculate pro-rated leave accruals.  The text explanation of the calculation is:

VA ACCR RATE

* The employee’s reported regular paid hours

+ unscheduled straight time (UST)

÷ the forecasted hours for a full-time employee with the same work schedule

Visually this isn't really appealing.  This is an introduction slide, the subsequent slides walk them through the calculation with examples.

Does anyone have any suggestions for visually displaying the calculation?

Hi Brandy,

To me this kind of thing is just crying out for a live calculator your learners can play with. How cool would it be to explain how it works, then give them a calculator they can try different scenarios out on.... including their own hours!

Not sure what your coding skills are (mine are nearly non-existent!), but I think I know that this kind of thing can be done in javascript as well as in Flash.

Good luck.

Hi Brandy, have you seen this Articulate Guru course? http://community.articulate.com/blogs/elearning-examples/archive/2011/04/02/what-your-teachers-never-told-you-about-managing-your-money.aspx

It has some good ideas for how to present calculation-related data with images, narration, and animations. Kind of along the lines of the Shelley shared above.
