Community Challenge #1 -I nspiration
May 15, 2013
Since this challenge is meant to inspire, I thought it would be a great idea for our first topic. I want you to find a piece of artwork, artist, album cover, game art, or anything that inspires you artistically and create a navigation menu around it. Example: If the work of MC Escher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M._C._Escher) inspires you, try to create a navigation menu that would match his works.
Just a few rules:
The menu must work, meaning if you click on a menu item it must present/take you to new content.
You must a have 5 total slides. 1 Menu, 4 content slides. The content slides don’t need to flow. They are just there so when you click on a menu button, you are presented with new info.
The main focus is on the navigation slide. The content slides are just extra fluff. The content slides can contain some info about the artist, the artwork, why it inspires you, or anything else that is relevant. They don’t have to be spruced up, but if you have time, go for it.
Have Fun!

This challenge ends on the 15th of June. I will be putting up another post on the 5th of June where you can post your entries. Use this post to place pictures, sketches, questions, comments, and ideas of your WIPs (work in progress).

@Tim - yey! Am fresh back from seeing Rush in London so love that.
@Phil - great Proving that simplicity combined with functionality wins the day.
@Gina - loved the "old-timey" look and feel.
Looking forward to the next competition - I love seeing how people visualise the same thing in a different way (hence the "egg" post).

Yes!
Alright well I'm too impatient to wait to submit mine, but here is the (close to) final product. I was messing around with Dropbox as I had not used it to upload anything yet, so I apologize for the jitteriness of the story as Dropbox doesn't seem to be the *best* host. I'll find something to use sometime!
The Tree of Life
(Note: Does contain mildly NSFW art, but I toned it down a little. Plus, it's art.)
@Tim and @Phil...those are awesome!
@ Rachel - This is fun - Great Job!
Rachel - that is absolutely beautiful
Love the little animation on the creaturey-fellow too :)
Works very smoothly for me via DropBox.
Lovely piece of work.

Ok Escher fans...my community challenge number 1 is here ! If the instrumental Eleanor Rigby gets a bit much, feel free to mute it The info slides are a bit blagh, but need to get back to work so concentrated more on the menu. Hope you enjoy, it was sooo much fun to make. If only this was my job...Oh wait...
Anna,
Fabulous - absolutely great piece of work
Bruce
Anne, that is BEAUTIFUL!
OK, I am going to go with Rene Magritte, a Belgian painter... not finished yet, but here is a screenshot:
@Rachel - lovely. I really like the rain effect on the depression slide and bring on the NSWF.
@ Anne - I agree with Bruce this is fabulous.
@ Veronica - I can't wait to see what you do with this one. Should be fun.
Some great stuff appeared here simce I last looked
@ Rachel I love the rain
@ Anne Lovely piece of work many nice ideas.
@ Gina Noce idea with the books, you could switch the book for a library card instead of leaving the book and overlaying text.
Noticed on a couple of of the posted examples who are using a black player with a black page the player is still showing up, this is because the articulate player is not true black (???) you need to recolour the player.
PS Bruce never commented on yours but it wa s a great idea well implemented.
Wow just loving all the menu entries..
My demo is here
Pretty simple demo with Miro inspired images & colors + text animation + hovering + selected states changed + music.
Enjoy!

Ok here is mine. I got a little distracted from the purpose of the challenge because I got caught up in trying to use the player tabs to call my menu and I wanted to make sure that everything works in html5. I did manage to uncover an number of challenges trying to get it to run in html5 but it does for the most part.
Enjoy.
@Eric... that is really cool... I had a similar idea of having the hand click things for another project I'm working on, but couldn't figure out how to do it. Can you share your secret?
Hey Nancy!
Loving that - especially the monkey
Great little graffiti expo there
Bruce
Eimear, I really like this. I love how the title/header font captures the feel of the painting and it carried throughout the piece. Very cool
LOVE IT! Great job!
Hey Eric, I just had a chance to look at your menu and I think it is very beautiful and creative. I have one small suggestion though. Is there any way that you can highlight the areas that are clickable when the hand hovers over them? I kept selecting the same thing and was not sure if I visited all the areas or not.
Wow! I am inspired! I might try to do one based on the work of James Christensen.
I think it would be great to just have these links + descriptions all together at the end in one "Showcase" type of area.
Any thoughts?
Bruce
Agree - there is some nice stuff here and it will all be buried unless we can showcase it somehow. Tom said that Articulate would support this monthly challenge so maybe they can put something in place for it.
Agree links would help, we do need something here to make it all work, could build the voting in as well
I plan on creating a post where all the final entries are listed with a small description. I think I said around Jun 5th is when I'll do that. Then we can open it up to voting after that. If everyone still wants to remain anonymous to make the voting fair, you can PM me a link to your final output with a small description and then I'll post it.
Hi, I haven't been able to finish mine as I changed jobs and don't have access to Storyline any more, but I'll post the 3/4 finished version anyway. I am planning to buy Storyline before the end of the financial year, hopefully!
Jerson - do we really need voting here?
Seems to me that perhaps the beauty of this thread was to get people to think in ways they have not done before?
