Course Structure Dilemma

May 09, 2018

Hi All, I hope you can help me!

I have a course that I use during orientation for manufacturing operators. The course has four modules (set up with four buttons to go to each topic after a brief intro video of how they are related). The employee has to get 100% on each quiz and they have two tries per quiz question. All four modules are set up in the tell-test methodology so after every couple of slides, there is one or two quiz questions. The employee knows they will have to retake the quiz if they get the first question wrong. Usually I tell them to continue on with the module and the remaining modules before attempting to retake the quiz(zes). (This is ok with most people,  some people would prefer to retake one module until they get 100%.) I have the course set up so that you can just retake the quiz but it is all four quizzes in one. The other option is to skip the intro video and go to the menu, click the button for the module they need to retake and skip the informational slides and just answer the quiz questions.

The problem is, I spend most of the 2+ hours telling people how to close the program, relaunch the story, say "no" to resume where you left off to clear out your answers, etc. AND having to close the IE pop-up window in between quizzes or else it doesn't load properly, etc.

The story is not connected to any LMS, it just sits on our network and users access it through laptops only. I use Storyline 2. Any advice to structuring this course better or settings that I am not aware of that will make my life easier? I guess I can add more "retake quiz" buttons, but is there a way to clear out answers without having to re-launch the story?

Sadly, this part of the training has become my most dreaded!

(Side note: I am in the process of removing some chunks of info and creating a "200 level" class since we realized there was way too much info for new people, which is part of the problem, I'm sure.)

Hi there!

I think your structure is generally fine, it's more your users and the systems they are taking it on. I used to work on a complicated LMS etc. where IE was a pain. Is there a way you can have a pop-up video that says they must take the quiz in Google Chrome (since it's clean and doesn't have a ton of add-on interference)? That may help and also have a pre-screen before the quiz saying something like" WAIT! - are you taking this in Chrome?"

To me IE is just a giant headache itself, so simplifying it for yourself, your users, and also not having to completely restructure seems like the way to go. You need to do what's best for the learning and for them to retain the information so you don't need to keep adding attempts and such. You just need to work with the technology they have and they also need to work with yours. :) (just my two cents)

I hope you're having a lovely day!
